WASHINGTON -- Democrats and a handful of Republicans rebelled against the government funding bill Thursday, with a possible government shutdown looming just hours away.

The inelegantly named "cromnibus" appropriations bill would fund the government after current funding expires at midnight. But Democratic lawmakers revolted against the must-pass legislation because it includes riders that would gut campaign finance rules and undo provisions in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform act designed to curb risky trading at the heart of the 2008 financial crisis. Washington (CNN) -- Congress is uncomfortably close to another government shutdown ahead of a midnight deadline to pass a spending bill.
There are still options to keep Washington running for either a few days or a few months. But the massive spending package that would have kept the government functioning through September is bogged down in the House, where large chunks of both parties are opposing the measure. The Senate isn't expected to vote on anything until a bill clears the House.
After debating the $1.1 trillion spending package, the House went into recess around 2 p.m. as leaders scrambled to shore up support for the measure.
