Daylight Slaving Time?

Has Dr. Paul ever given any thought to eliminating the aggravation of setting clocks forward and backwards for no good reason? My Dad was griping about how ridiculous Daylight Savings Time is and I told him Dr. Paul might repeal it. He is the only oplitician I know who would even consider it. He said he would vote for him if he could get rid of Daylight Saving Time and return us back to Standard Time 365 days a year!

Here is the legislative history of Daylight Savings Time (my dad is 74 yrs old so he has lived through most of it!)

Why would you want to eliminate it? I don't know what Ron Paul's position would be, but as far as I know states are free to not participate. Indiana was on standard time all year up until recently, and I think Hawaii is always standard.

EXACTLY!

I am not talking about changing time zones - just the silly Spring Forward-Fall Back Ritual that we must endure that disrupts everyone's sleep routine.

Funny, I was looking yesterday seeing if Ron Paul voted for or against the DST change last year. I came up empty handed. IF any Ron Paul scholars want to dig that up, I would be interested. I would guess that he voted No.
"Clock shifts and DST rule changes have a direct economic cost, since they entail extra work to support remote meetings, computer applications and the like. For example, a 2007 North American rule change cost an estimated $500 million to $1 billion.[29]"

"the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) reviewed the DOT study in 1976 and found no significant energy savings.[5] In 2000 when parts of Australia began DST in late winter, overall electricity consumption did not decrease, but the morning peak load and prices increased.[6] A 2007 simulation estimated that introducing DST to Japan would increase energy use in Osaka residences by 0.13%, with a 0.02% decrease due to less lighting more than outweighed by a 0.15% increase due to extra cooling; the simulation did not examine non-residential buildings.[20] "

Yes, that is up to the states whether to do this or not. AZ does not participate so they never have to change their clocks back and forth throughout the year.

To me it seems like something the government should be in charge of.

"To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;"

The government imposed the Daylight Savings Time on us and it was supposed to some how save energy, but that hasn't happened. All it really does is mess people up getting up an extra hour earlier, or having forgotten to reset their clock they are late for church or work. It is a rather ridiculous intrusion on an otherwise normal average day, don't you think? Life would be simplier without having to worry with it, IMHO.

The last time it saved us money and/or energy was right after its introduction in WW2. Since then it has been a waste of time. Heck if I had it my way, I would see if we could eliminate time zones all together. I mean does it really matter if its sunny on our side of the earth at midnight?

Since the states can choose to do it themselves or not, then I think the federal government should do away with whatever regulation they gave out that encourages it. I think most states probably only go along with it because the federal government recommended it, so if they stopped recommending it, most states would probably stop using it.

I think we have it all backwards anyway. They need to keep summer time where it is and then Fall Forward an hour when the days start to get shorter. It would keep me from enjoying 4:30 pm sunsets.

Why Do We Need Any Official Government Time?

Before the Standard Time Zones were introduced, each community went by local astronomical time. When Standard Time was enacted (in 1883, I think), it helped the railroads by making it easier to plan train routes.

Congress presumably has power to do this under Article I, Section 8 (the power to set the standard of weights and measures).

My question is this: In the Internet Age, when we have GPS and super-fast computers, can we not return to the original system of using local astronomical time? It would be easy to calculate time at any location. To me, the whole Standard ? Daylight Time thing is the remnant of a 19th & 20th century central planning mentality that has no place in the 21st.

:D

I would think that Standard time is included in Weights and Measures.

I am a sanitation worker. We begin picking up at 7:00 am in the morning. In the week or so before the clocks roll back, it is dark on the streets. In addition to not being able to always clearly see what I'm picking up (believe me, this is important), It's really hard for cars to see me despite my reflective safety clothing. 21st century this may be, trash still has to get picked up and I don't want to be killed or maimed at work. DST is a good thing for us, and I think most will agree with me that ours' is an important profession even if most folks don't want to think about it.

pressing a button on a clock doesnt bother me. it's because we can't measure exact minutes, so after awhile milliseconds add up to seconds, to minutes, and eventually about an hour. thats why suddenly it's lighter/darker at completely wrong times.

when it adds up enough, we change the clocks accordingly. it's now sunrise at 6am again, and everyone goes back to their normal lives. i hate the period where it's 8am and the sun is just beginning to come up.

So you think it's easier to have everyone reset their clocks by an hour than it is for the sanitation department to start and end your job an hour later during that time of year?
