Cruz supporters dominate delegates at Washington GOP convention

SEATTLE -- Texas Senator Ted Cruz may no longer be in the presidential race, but his supporters cleaned up at the Washington State Convention in Pasco Saturday.

Cruz’s State Chair, Saul Gamoran, tells KING 5 Cruz supporters won 40 out of the 41 individual national delegate spots. Three state party leaders will also attend the Republican National Convention, for a total of 44 delegates headed to Cleveland in July.

Washington’s delegates will be bound by the results of Tuesday's presidential primary. But they would have been free to vote for the candidate of their choice upon a second ballot during a contested convention.

As a result, Cruz supporters launched an intensive behind the scenes delegate battle across the state to select as many pro-Cruz delegates as possible at county and legislative district conventions.

The GOP’s presumptive frontrunner, Donald Trump, still needs to secure the required 1,237 delegates required for the nomination. However, both Ted Cruz and John Kasich suspended their campaigns earlier in the month, clearing the path for Trump.

State party leaders remain committed to their calls for party unity, urging Republicans to support the nominee. But Cruz supporters still hope to use their position as delegates to influence party platforms at the National Convention.

“I am delighted that constitutional conservative activists who have worked so hard for 13 months were rewarded by the convention with the privilege of representing our state in Cleveland,” said Saul Gamoran.

Meanwhile, Trump supporters remain confident they will win Tuesday's primary and continued local campaign efforts even after the race effectively came to a close a couple of weeks ago.

Until Trump reaches 1,237, they say they're not talking anything for granted.

i hope Cruz gets a speaking slot like Ron Paul was supposed to get.

and all 44 will vote for Trump on first ballot. There won't be a second ballot. Sucks to be them.

Trump will probably get all the speaking slots:

Trump Advisor Suggests Trump May Speak Every Night at the RNC Convention

Look for this year’s RNC Convention to take on the feel of President Camacho’s first speech from the movie, “Idiocracy.”

Senior advisor to Trump, Barry Bennett, has suggested that in breaking with tradition, where the nominee speaks on the last night of the convention, convention-goers may be treated to a nightly pep talk from the gilded toad.

Said Bennett:

“I think when it comes to the program a lot of us feel that we could juice up the format just a little,” Bennett told Masters in Politics. “More entertaining, more interesting. I don’t know why the candidate only speaks on acceptance night, why shouldn’t he speak every night from a different city? How come we are not doing broadcasts on Facebook or Google, why are we just relying on 45 minutes of network television time?”

Yes. That is what the convention has been missing all these years. It needs pizazz! Sex appeal! Maybe we can have a Jell-O wrestling match between Trump strumpets, Laura Ingraham and Ann Coulter.

I’m personally looking forward to the extreme wrestling-styled cage match battle between Trump’s personal gimps, Eric Bolling and Sean Hannity.

Of course, Rush Limbaugh will be the announcer for all these events.

Do you think I’m being facetious?

Maybe slightly – but only slightly. This is what the GOP has been reduced to with Trump at the helm. He is not a serious or even remotely rational man. He is a caricature. He is Ronald McDonald, Burger King, and the lady from the old Wendy’s commercials who would ask, “Where’s the beef?”

He’s just a face, so putting on a show is really all he knows. If you’re looking for substance, it’s going to be a long, barren journey.

In the days following his win in Indiana, several top Republicans have said they won’t attend the convention in Cleveland. Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush both said they would not be involved in the process, as did former candidate and Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Former presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Lindsey Graham also said they wouldn’t attend the convention.

You can count these men among those who don’t enjoy watching train wrecks.

They're all unbound when they vote for the VP; if they don't like the candidate, they can force a ballot.

I could see Cruz delegates vote for a VP sooo bad that its designed to make Trump lose.

Can they do that? Can they vote Sarah Palin as VP?
