Cruz, pro-amnesty memo from '99… KABOOOOOOM!

"I oppose amnesty. I oppose citizenship. I oppose legalization. I always have and I always will. Ted Cruz 2015

Very carefully worded, pro-amnesty memo by Ted Cruz, for George Bush circa 1999!

Sounds pro-amnesty, anti-making-english-the-official-language of US, advises Bush to respond to questions about supporting amnesty with "No. Not at this time."

Yep, he's a lawyer first, to the core!

We all know there was a HUUUUGE pro-amnesty push from George Bush in 2006, which citizens just barely managed to halt by melting down the DC switchboards!

As a policy aide on Mr. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign, Mr. Cruz struck a very different tone on immigration than he is offering today.

Rand must've known all about it! ;)

I wonder how much the check to Ted, for his support of the NAU, from the Rothschilds, was for?

What's the current going price for souls these days?

im not sure where the big gotcha points in that paper are.. anybody want to point it out for me?

From what I can gather, Ted Cruz said something one time and then said something else some other time.

Apparently, this is expected to have some kind of effect upon his prospects.

I think the implication is that Cruz will take whatever position will help him politically, but everyone knows that by now.

What could actually be damaging is the history between Cruz and the Bush family, since Cruz is trying to sell himself as anti-establishment.

In all fairness, there are also relationships between Cruz and the Pauls. Aside from Ron 2012 pretty much getting him elected, Rand's wife used to write speeches for Cruz.

In 2015 Cruz claims that he has never supported amnesty. And in 1999 he wrote a memo in which he at that time didn't support amnesty.

Is that the extent of it?

The American Public has rejected any form of amnesty when the last two presidents tried it. Cruz hasn't supported it either but he also won't rule it out either. He wouldn't rule it out in 2000, and he won't rule it out now. I didn't need to see the paper to know this though, you can tell he has strong opinions about immigration that he has held for many years and he is not being up front about them at all.

Strange how Cruz can change his political positions on issues but nobody else can do it and get away with it.

Cruz wrote policy for Bush back then, not himself.

Aides don't necessarily agree with the boss all the time.

I'm not defending Cruz here, I'm pointing out the obvious. Rand's campaign hired people who worked for campaigns opposing Ron the last time. It's common practice.

Yes but the point is when asked about it he answered the question in the debate/interview in the same language that he outlined in this policy he wrote up for bush for 2000. The messaging he is using now is different and he claims he never changed his mind so either he is pandering and dishonest or he changed his mind and Rand is willing to call bullshit on Ted Cruz's failure to make the distinction.

Why are we attacking Cruz so much again? If Rand doesn't win the GOP nomination, I would prefer Cruz over the others. Rand and Cruz have probably voted together somewhere around 95-98% of the time in the Senate.

The point is Rand just told us that we should question Cruz's authenticity 100% of the time for president.

No idea, Cruz is mostly ok with me.

Because we want Rand to win and aren't hedging our bets in anticipation that he'll lose. I'm willing to venture most on here would rather not vote or vote 3rd party rather than vote for Cruz.

Cruz could have squashed this thing in less than 10 seconds, but he proved himself to be an establishment politician with what they in the south like to call the old "hem haw". Just like the man himself, his campaign goes behind peoples' backs to attack its opponents. They are the "unnamed GOP strategist" sourcing the attack articles on Rand and some of the other campaigns, too.

I won't vote for that cocksucker even if he paid me to.

NO ONE BUT PAUL

Here is the text of the document. I tried to keep it as close the original as I could.

Immigration General Principles

Legal Immigration

  • This county is a land build by immigrants, and that, as Governor of a boarder state, I have seen first-hand the richness and great benefits immigrants have brought America.
  • AMERICA IS STRONGER WITH THE MANY IMMIGRANTS WHO COME HERE TO MAKE A NEW LIFE AND PARTICIPATE IN THE AMERICAN DREAM.

Policy Examples:
  • Supports lifting the current limit on H1-B visas for high-tech workers and improving and expanding H2-A visas to enable temporary agricultural workers to enter the county legally.

Illegal Immigrants
  • I STRONGLY OPPOSE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.
  • The federal government should do its job and enforce the borders with programs like "Operation Hold the Line."
  • But, at the same time, we need to remember that many of those coming here are coming to geed their families, to have a change at a better life. It is only if we continue to expand free trade with our neighbors, to strengthen our economy and help build a middle class in countries like Mexico, that we will ultimately reduce the pressure for people to have to leave their homes to provide for their children.
  • Also, we must do a better hob of deporting those illegal aliens who commit crimes and are caught and convicted. Right now, too many of these criminals serve their sentences and are released, rather than being deported when their term is up.

Should legal immigration be increased? Decreased? Should there be a greater emphasis on skills?

  • I think we need to carefully assess our legal immigration programs, and look for ways to bring in more highly skilled workers to help our booming economy. Of course, we need to continue working to try to bring families together as they immigrate, but we also need to assess ways to make sure we have enough high-tech workers to keep the Information Age booming.

What can be done to alleviate the extended waiting periods families face trying to rejoin family members in America?
  • I think real changes need to be made to make the INS more responsive to the needs and concerns of legal immigrants. that's why I support dividing the INS into two branches, an enforcement branch and a service branch, so that the one can concentrate on securing our border and stopping the flow of illegal aliens, and the other can work with the many legal immigrants to help them transition into their new home.
  • In addition, I think we ought to pass H.R.840, which allows family members of resident aliens to obtain tourist visas while they are waiting to rejoin their families permanently. I think it's only fair, and I think ti's the right thing to do.

How can we stop illegal immigration?
  • I strongly oppose illegal immigration, and I have often urged the federal government to do its job of enforcing our borders with programs like "Operation Hold the Line," which has had tremendous success in El Paso. We need to do so in a humane way, understanding that people are coming here trying to feed their children and find a better life, but we need to enforce the border nonetheless.

CALIFORNIA'S PROPOSITION 187

What do you think about Prop 187? Should we provide benefits to illegal aliens? Welfare benefits? Health care? Eduction?
  • I did non support Proposition 187. I think that all children, regardless of their immigration status, should be educated. It doesn't make sense to do otherwise. An educated child is less likely to commit a crime or join a gang and more likely to be productive. I don't think we should be providing welfare benefits to legal immigrants who came here years and years ago. In Texas, I authorized up to $18 million in food assistance for 28,000 elderly and disabled legal immigrants who had worked here for years but whose benefits were cut off by the federal government.

FEDERAL REIMBURSEMENT

Should the federal government reimburse the states for money spent on illegal aliens?
  • Yes. I think the most effective use of federal money to stop illegal immigration is at the front end, stopping people from illegally entering our country, not at the back end, reimbursing states afterwards. But, as Governor of Texas, I know first-hand the huge costs that border states face as a result of the federal government's failure to enforce our border. As President, I would allocate additional resources to enforcing the border so that those costs would be less. And, I know that current federal reimbursement programs are not adequate, so I intend to work with Congress and the states to improve them.

AMNESTY PROGRAMS

Do you support amnesty for illegal aliens already here? How about "conditional" amnesty?
  • Not at this time. I think we need to consider all options where trying to resolve our immigration problem and what to do with the millions of illegal immigrants already living here. But, right now, I don't think amnesty is the answer. Instead, I think we need to do a better job enforcing our border and that we should expand and improve our guest worker program so that workers can come here legally and help our farmers with important work that there currently aren't enough people to carry out.

GUEST WORKER PROGRAMS

Would you implement a "guest worker" program? Wouldn't that just return to the discredited "Bracero" regime and trap workers as second-class indentured servants?

  • I have repeatedly called for improving and expanding our guest worker program so that workers can come here legally and help our farmers with important work that there currently aren't enough people to carry out. Our farmers need the help, and the workers definitely want to come, and so we have to do something. And I think we co do it in a way that protects the rights and dignity of the workers while at the same time responding to the needs of the farmers.

ENGLISH AS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE

Should English be the official language of the United States?
  • English is already the language of the United States. Our entire history has been in English, from the Declaration of Independence to the Constitution to the way government and business conducts its affairs today. There is no doubt that learning English is critical to success in America, and that we should ensure that every child meets that standard of English literacy so that no one is left behind. But, at the same time, our history has been one of people from cultures all over the world coming to the New World and bringing their traditions and cultures with them. In Texas, the Spanish language enhances and helps define our state's history. Those languages, those histories, only make us richer, and we are better off for them.

If Puerto Rico became a state, would it have to adopt English as its official language?
  • If Puerto Rico were to become our 51st state, that would be one the challenges we would have to deal with. There is no doubt that Puerto Rico, as a state, would deal with the rest of the country on equal footing an in our common tongue. But, at the same time, we would still recognize the important richness that the Spanish language and culture brings to the Puerto Rico and to the nation as a whole.

What have you done about the border town in Texas that declared Spanish its official language (El Cenizo)?
  • I have consistently said that in order to be successful in America, people need to be able to read and write in English. And, as a general matter, I believe that government business in America should be conducted in English.

I'd vote for any of the GOP candidates besides Trump against the Clintons.

Ok, but I just don't see how attacking Cruz makes it any more likely that Rand will win. He should've learned by attacking Trump that attacking the anti establishment candidates only make him go down in the polls. A smarter strategy would've been to attack Bush and Rubio from the beginning.
