Twitter has been sued in Canada for allowing allegedly defamatory tweets to be published on its platform.

The Canadian court has denied Twitter's motion to have the suit dismissed on jurisdictional grounds.

No judgment on the merits of the case has been made.

This may be a purely procedural judgment, but its implications are HUGE - not only for twitter, but for YouTube as well.

This is good news! Force them in court (even in a canuck court) to admit that they are either: a publisher that can edit and remove content they deem inappropriate, or that they are not responsible for their content because they are just a platform for open communication.

Are they more like a newspaper that publishes content by its users?
Or more like the telephone company that allows people to communicate without interference?

Their recent actions seem to suggest they see themselves as the former which means they can be held liable.
