Cost to run an entire radio station in Iowa

My mere presence on these boards should indicate that I'm open to new ideas. My comments in this thread should show I've considered this new idea. Even a cursory analysis of the idea he's proposing exposes its gross flaws which vastly outweight the benefits.

Conclusion, the idea is bad.

My recomendation:

Spend some money on ads with:

the 3 biggest Iowa Christian Station.
Every Station that carries Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity
The biggest alternative Rock Station

Craft targeted 30 second ads telling about RP's position and take 5 - 10 seconds at the end to direct people to your already existing internet radio station (which is awesome BTW).

If there's any money left over, buy 30 minute blocks as close to primetime (super early morning or after 10 PM is what they'd sell you I'm guessing) as you can afford and they will actually sell you. Run a show about Ron Paul in your unique style.

Let us know how it goes.

Generally when you're out campaigning, you can only take a very limited time with each individual. It's hard to get in a lot of info in that time. Having good material is the way to go, but as someone who's spent plenty of time standing around talking to random people, I feel that being able to say "Tune in to XX.X on your FM dial!" would be a really powerful message.

Furthermore, from a marketing perspective, we could untie it from Ron Paul completely. Imagine banners around town saying something like "Are you ready for real change? Tune to FM XX.X!" - people would do it, and hearing shows like we have and Dr. Paul speeches... that's powerful stuff. Guerrilla marketing is powerful, piquing our targets' curiosity without immediately tying in the Ron Paul brand is a good approach, too, and a broadcast station opens up some awesome opportunities to use that tactic, in my opinion.
'
All said, it is expensive. The possibilities exist for it to be very useful as a campaigning tool. Whether it would live up to the value of the cost is nigh impossible to predict. In the end, it has to be up to individuals with the means to either make it happen or not.

While I do like your idea, the problem is it doesn't work with what he's trying to start. He doesn't own a radio station, he can't plug himself 24/7. Any marketing campagin saying 'tune-in to XX.X FM' Would instead be

Tune in at XX.X FM monday at 2:30 PM and 7:30PM on Thursdays.' It provide the instantaneous information your excited about, it distracts form current information that COULD be made available immediately.

It makes much more sense to promote the web feed. Its accesible at anytime form anywhere.

We don't HAVE money to pay for a bunch of ads! That's why we need to do something for the people, not for Ron Paul radio! Jeez!

I'd say a lot of my ideas so far have worked out pretty well.

Peace, I'm out!

Writing a bestseller doesn't mean your next book will be one as well...

As far as not having money to run ads, you're asking for money to get your show, why not isnteqad ask for money for ads?

Except people without internet access, which is probably our biggest problem demographic. Also, people without the computer skills to install/configure a netradio-capable media player.

No offense, Iowa, but I figure this may actually be a relatively large demographic in Iowa...

Hence why I said give em CD's

Cheaper then a radio station, and targets people who are unaware but interested.

Thanks for you're position.

DjLoti...

Love your radio website....and respect your efforts....

But if you want to spend money on advertising....

Radio isn't the way to go IMHO....

This country is 60% braindead....and growing....

unable to fathom anything except what they see on TV....

30 or 60 second TV ads on the Iowa television stations major markets 6'oclock news is a much better spend...

This is the way to reach the audience we are not reaching.....

So many older people get zip for information from the internet or radio....

they can be influenced easily with the right ad on television....

It's sad to say...but too many people in this country buy into the Boob Tube....

I know it's more expensive...but I believe much more cost effective in results....

I like this idea

Personally I believe this is a good and innovative idea. We could spend money on television and radio ads, but fewer people pay attention to those and they would be drowned out by Mitt's countless other ads. A radio station would work with the older generation which is our biggest weakness. I passed out flyers in a parade, and not one person over 60 had ever heard of Ron Paul.

I suggest you promote this station by making homemade signs and place them on the road. They don't have to be creative just encourage drivers to tune into to whatever your station dial is. People will listen to this. How do you think Rush got on the air?

Maybe it's time to just kick it old school and buy some bullhorns and rent an Econoline....

Hello! Well - basically it would be up to you - we could run you an hour a
week for $100/hr, one day a week for $1,000 / day, or if you wanted to we
might be able to run you from now through the caucuses for about $40,000 -
proration of $10,000/month depending on when the caucuses are finally
held...

It seems a bit expensive, but we'd be barely covering our costs :-)

and how did you come to these estimates? why not just accept advertisers

I just looked at the Ron Radio website and I'm really impressed by it. That gave me an idea. There are lots of college radio stations all over the country. All need programming to fill 24 hours per day. Why not let them know about Ron Paul Radio and have them contact the website and the meetup groups and you can charge them a flat fee to carry the programming? If no one objects (or if it hasn't been done already), I'll send out emails to stations in the January primary caucuses states.

Right on. I need to really hit the grindstone, cuz I've been slacking a little bit, but I'm going to start hitting the grindstone.

Having colleges do their own radio station for Ron Paul radio is a great way for people to get involved, and we could easily boost name recognition for Ron Paul. All we need according to the numbers given to me by the station manager is about $350 a day to run the radio station 24/7 until the caucuses. I think, if done correctly, we could easily achieve such a thing through advertising. We could advertise Ron Paul stuff, too.

$40,000 from August to the caucus!!! But nooo... a radio station would have not been a good idea!!!

A $600,000 blimp, however... whoo!! Thank god we used the money in the best possible way!!!

Man... what a missed opportunity!!! I hope people have more of an open mind for 2012!!!

I agree with your assessment on the blimp. A suggestion I have though is to name the radio station something like "Liberty Radio Network" and use "Ron Paul Radio" as a moniker used by many of the hosts. That way ad revenue can be generated during the campaign to allow for the station's survival and eventual growth into a full-fledged network.

I am putting in for Mexican nationality and hope to have it by this spring. That would make me eligible to deal with media here without political restrictions and look into the cost of paying for use of licensed equipment at a station on a border town as well. Imagine: Iowa first and then all of a sudden San Diego is covered as well.

Radio stations and blimps are equally awful investments. As someone said 3 years ago, the only people who will tune in are people who already know about Ron Paul, or people who skip through the station on their way to another.

"Decision 2012 Radio" with an overt bias towards Ron Paul??
