Cornell: Students Plan Protest

Don't count on winning over people here illegally who are looking at it as their ticket to legalization and college funding. there is such a thing as having a stake in the argument.

Not if you put it like that. But people who are looking for a "ticket to legalization and college funding" might be open to hearing another view. Here are some things Ron has said on the issue that might be taken positive by the people you've described.

Give illegals limbo status: a green card with an asterisk
Immigrants who can't be sent back due to the magnitude of the problem should not be given citizenship--no amnesty should be granted. Maybe a "green card" with an asterisk could be issued. This in-between status, keeping illegal immigrants in limbo, will be said that it will create a class of 2nd-class citizens. Yet it could be argued that it may well allow some immigrants who come here illegally a beneficial status without automatic citizenship--a much better option than deportation.

Sending 12M illegals home won't & shouldn't happen
Even with a healthy economy and stricter border controls, the issue of what to do with twelve-million-plus illegals already here would persist. One side says use the U.S. Army, round them up, and ship them home. The other side says give them amnesty, make them full-fledged citizens, and reward the lawbreakers, thus insulting and unfairly penalizing those who have patiently waited and obeyed our immigration laws. The first choice--sending twelve to fifteen million illegals home--isn't going to happen and should not happen. Neither the determination or the ability to accomplish it exists. Besides, if each case is looked at separately, we would find ourselves splitting up families and deporting some who have lived here for decades, if not their entire life, and who never lived for any length of time in Mexico.

If economy were good, there’d be no immigration problem
Q: When you ran for president in 1988, you said, “As in our country’s first 150 years, there shouldn’t be any immigration policy at all. We should welcome everyone who wants to come here and work.” You’ve changed your view.

A: And during that campaign I got into trouble with Libertarians because I said there may well be a time when immigration is like an invasion and we have to treat it differently. My approach to immigration is somewhat different than the others. Mine is you deal with it economically We’re in worse shape now because we subsidize immigration. We give food stamps, Social Security, free medical care, free education and amnesty. So you subsidize it, and you have a mess. Conditions have changed. And I think this means that we should look at immigration differently. It’s an economic issue more than anything. If our economy was in good health, I don’t think there’d be an immigration problem. We’d be looking for workers and we would be very generous.

So Ron's view? Don't grant legal status to those who broke the law to get here, but don't deport them either. Demagnetize our nation by cutting back the welfare state and moving people to independence, and improve the economy. Do those things and well as getting the government out of the education business, which is driving up the cost for everybody, and the American "dream" because more possible for the native born and the immigrants of all stripes.

I hope they show up and get their asses kicked. Clueless fucks.

UM what? By who? Are you suggesting Ron Paul supporters should physically assault people who are protesting? If all the RP supporters who have gone to other candidates rallies and protested "got their asses kicked" we'd be crying foul and raising a ruckus.

Are you mentally disabled?

The only people who would protest Ron Paul are in-denial commies not even educated about their own ideology! (And I'm saying this as a former communist myself. In fact, I still think Che was a cool guy! Just not these uneducated hipsters...)

That should be fascinating....

Wearing pajamas is no problem. I absolutely support their right to wear pajamas.... :p

I suggest they donate to the Ron Paul Money Bomb, that will show us :o)

at times like this I wish Ron took Secret Service protection. Especially since they are talking about throwing things at him.

Argghhh...I graduated Cornell 17 years ago...it figures idiots from my school would be the one's protesting!

Don't protest at Paul events, you will simply look stupid.

And on top of that you'll be documented as being stupid for as long as the internet is around.

I found the "10 mind-blowingly offensive quotes" linked article within the article... interesting.

Isaiah Zeke Hunter A pro-life stance is clearly not consistent with the basic core of libertarian philosophy, which is about the liberty of citizens. Fetuses are clearly not citizens.
Also, it is not about "killing babies," but instead about a women's choice about whether or not she wants to use her body as life support system. For example, you have the right to not let me use your body as a life support system. Women should have the same legal right.

So. According to this logic may I please "Abort" paying all forms of welfare since those that do collect it are on the "life support" which provides free food and housing by the tax dollars from my productivity? What? "But that's different?" Do tell. Do tell.

From the article:

However, not all of the DREAM teamers are on board with this option. In emails obtained by IvyGate, one member sent out a plea to the team’s googlegroup detailing her personal disagreement with the plan:

“The Cornell DREAM Team should think carefully
before engaging in activity that would compromise
our status as the winners of the Perkins Prize for
Interracial Understanding and Harmony. We should
NOT “boo” or throw ANYTHING at the stage. By
doing this, we aren’t really promoting interracial
understanding very harmoniously.”

Uh oh, trouble in the ranks? But this seemed like such a solid, well thought out plan … What’s going to happen to all the pajamas?

Pajamas aside, this dispute did invite a response from a member of the googlegroup, in favor for some sort of action against Paul. He writes, “However, personally I feel that it is my responsibility to legally protest a documented racist politician that is against birth-right citizenship, welfare and the Dream Act.” And in speaking for the group:

“There was consensus in the room that this is something
that we should participate in. There wasn’t necessarily
consensus about throwing things at the stage but it is
something that we need to talk about. By protesting this
we will take away the aura that college students blindly
follow Ron Paul and hopefully encourage our peers not
to do the same.”

That’s right everyone, follow the pajama-wearing pillow-throwers.

Well, there you have it. Two sides of the case, to throw or not to throw, the eternal question. What will happen Thursday remains to be seen, but pillows, diplomas, or just sharp words, it should be a good time.

Winning?

What I find interesting are the pettiness of their complaints. Dream act, welfare, and birth-right citizenship are very lame reasons to protest a federal candidate. I'm guessing they want publicity and this is their best plan and since they are in college, they might want to "think about the future". Not that I think any Ron Paul supporters would harm them but they would compromise the goals of expanding US citizenship - although I suspect they care more about welfare than freedom.

My prediction is that the protest organization attempt turns into a positive for the campaign.

I think blonde brush cut guy can take them.

Agent provocateurs and those simply wishing to start assaulting people or trowing objects can usually be surrounded and isolated by crowds not wishing to become violent themselves pretty easily, so long as the agitators aren't really willing to start killing and maiming people.

And Ron Paul has the opposite affect on people than arousing them to violence or to engage in mob behavior, so obvious agitators will be obvious.
