LiveBold, I don't typically like reposting things, so instead I'll link to a good thread on this...

Someone there was being very antagonistic toward the people who fear an NAU, so I made this post to explain exactly why a North American Union is so utterly terrifying:
http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showpost.php?p=1240396&postcount=17
The key takeaway here is this: At the very best, a North American Union would result in a loss of our sovereignty to an unelected body of officials that we have no control over, much like formerly sovereign European countries have lost their sovereignty to the EU, and they're now pretty much helpless against its mandates. At the worst (and this probably won't happen right away, but it's likely to happen eventually), it would be the ultimate, official death of the US Constitution.
The whole, "Why are these silly people so afraid of Mexicans?" thing is a straw-man argument meant to make opposition to the NAU look ridiculous and divert attention from the real issue: Loss of sovereignty. The more centralized government becomes, the more tyrannical and unaccountable to the people it becomes...and really, a North American Union is the last step before one-world government, which may start out all "nice and fuzzy" but will ultimately and inevitably become the absolute pinnacle of tyranny.
(That said, even if we disregard the real issue of sovereignty loss, there actually are some economic reasons why merging with Mexico and Canada would be beneficial for large corporations, would destroy America and Canada's standard of living, and would not help Mexicans much at all. I briefly elaborated on some of these in the other thread I linked to.)
EDIT: Ah, but I see you
want a one-world government...your desire is a foolish one, for the reasons I stated above, although you're probably right that it will happen...centralization is not only inefficient (because there's no competition between policies), and it not only makes it impossible for everyone to live the way they like (because of one-size-fits-all government), but the farther away from the people government becomes, the more unaccountable it becomes. Even more importantly, the more centralized power becomes, the more power-hungry and authoritarian people will seek positions of power, and the more sway special interests will have over all aspects of life. One-world government is not benevolent, and never can be. You want to end wars? Wars are caused by governments, not the common people...just ask Hermann Goering. With the lack of an external foe (which is a
bad thing, by the way...there will be nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and nobody to come and save us), government will wage war of some type or another on its own people. Under this one world government you're looking forward to, we might not be outright beheaded for speaking our minds, but we will instead be made "non-persons" who cannot buy or sell anything, and who must starve to death - an elegant solution to the "problem" of dissent, is it not?
Although it is in fact inevitable that one-world government would become tyrannical, I don't need to convince you of this. Instead, simply ask yourself, "Even if he's not right about inevitability of tyranny...
what if a one-world government was totally rampant and out of control? What if someone like Hitler came into power? What could we possibly do?" Yes, we would eventually prevail (barring some sort of dystopian future where our minds or emotions are dulled by drugs), but it would cost countless lives and countless tears. We're fighting an uphill battle now in the hope that we can save our children and grandchildren from fighting a much more terrible and costly battle...
To the OP: There are other posters who have definitely come up with a much better list, but for starters, check out the
search results for "North American" on the CFR webpage.
