In the episode, SpongeBob’s friend Patrick attempts to convince him to collect unemployment benefits, and SpongeBob refuses, opting instead to look for a job. The resulting media coverage offended reporters at outlets like Media Matters, who moaned that the portrayal of the collection of government benefits as mooching undermines the social welfare system. However, SpongeBob’s principled stand is a great lesson for children and reflects the rugged individualism for which America was once known.

I knew Patrick voted for Obama.

In the episode, SpongeBob’s friend Patrick characterizes unemployment as “the best gig I know.” He points out the advantages: huge amounts of spare time and free money. Though people on unemployment or welfare are supposed to aggressively look for jobs, many beneficiaries purposefully avoid finding a job until after the benefits run out completely.

SpongeBob, however, has a strong work ethic, and ultimately tells Patrick, “Unemployment may be fun for you, but I need to get a job.”

Seems like a whole lot of nothing really. Fox used the episode to try and make a point, now Media Matters are whining about it. If they'd both have just left it alone, it would have been just another episode.

What does Marxist Media Matters think of SOUTHPARK?

BTW, government has the statistics of everyone who's been on all the welfare programs and for how long/durations. Why doesn't Marxist Media Matters post an article on MOOCHERS of America? Why, because it would reveal just how shitty the economy is, even with all the failed stimulus, money printing, debt buying, paper swapping, part time decline of the country... except where Obamanomics' Trickle Down Nothing is suppose to go... Wall Street, Corporations, and the Banking Cabal.

All Partisan Bullshit and zero investigative journalism...

Still waiting for Ben Swann to investigate the Virginia .gov race and the money trails.

I'm actually REALLY surprised that they did this, and made it so obvious too. I guess the big gubmint lovers are getting a dose of their own medicine, aren't they? We constantly watch TV shows and movies with liberal agendas.

Read this article: http://nypost.com/2013/10/30/spongebob-fired-from-the-krusty-krab/

It says that Spongebob is fired so his boss can save money, but offers to work for free to keep his job. Mr. Krabs, his boss, denies his request for free work because it would be illegal to do so. Spongebob then refuses unemployment and goes searching for a job.

I haven't seen the episode, but if this is accurately summarized, then it is awesome.

Sponge Bob = American Hero.

I saw a headline that implied upset about how liberals should be careful what their kids watched, because SpongeBob used to be liberal but now they were suddenly using conservative talking points.

That should be a message to conservatives about what their kids are watching, but I think it will likely go Whoosh - over their heads.

Yeah, don't you remember he was turning all the kids gay?

You know, now that you mention it - I do recall something about conservatives being upset with SpongeBob about something gay. And I think there was some global warming stuff too.

But the article/blog I saw implied that those were good messages, but being anti-welfare was bad.

Patrick is definitely gay. I hate that character. I only like Squidward, he's cool.
