Washington (CNN)Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson is traveling to Jordan to meet with Syrian refugees Friday, according to a media report.

The goal of the surprise trip is to better understand the refugee crisis stemming from Syria's brutal civil war, his campaign told The New York Times -- and the trip comes as he struggles in the race with a renewed focus on foreign policy and national security.

Carson was set to leave for Jordan late Thanksgiving Day, The New York Times reported. He will visit the United Nations-run Azraq refugee camp in the northern part of the country, stopping at a clinic and hospital.

From intervention point of view, it is probably very hard for US neoconservatives/zionist interests to recruit Islamic militants/spies in Syria to fight against secular Syrian government without the carrot of moving them/their families to US as a reward.
