Same old stuff, this time about the book he wrote.

More of a liberty article if anything

Interesting thing is most people writing comments on CNN, a decent amount which do not appear to be supporters, seem to agree with Paul's book

CNN is really afraid of a Paul victory on Tuesday.....a real hit piece on the Front Page of CNN's Website right now....

Front Page Story of CNN Blasts Paul

View it for yourself. This is just days before the Iowa caucus. This is absurd. This is a blatant attempt to smear him for the sake of making him lose -- that's it. It's so obvious at this point that it's insane. What is WRONG with this country?

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) - Texas Rep. Ron Paul has distanced himself from a series of controversial newsletters from the 1980s and 1990s that bore his name and included inflammatory and racially charged language.

As the newsletters burst into view, first during his 2008 presidential bid and again in recent weeks after he climbed to the front of the Republican race in Iowa, Paul has blamed the writings on ghostwriters. He said he was not aware of the "bad stuff," as he described it.

But one of Paul's own books, published solely under his name, contains several passages that could be problematic as he attempts to push his libertarian message into the political mainstream.

In his 1987 manifesto "Freedom Under Siege: The U.S. Constitution after 200-Plus Years," Paul wrote that AIDS patients were victims of their own lifestyle, questioned the rights of minorities and argued that people who are sexually harassed at work should quit their jobs.

The slim, 157-page volume was published ahead of Paul's 1988 Libertarian Party presidential bid and touches on many of the themes he continues to hammer on the stump.

Returning again and again to the of concept of "liberty," he hails the virtues of the gold standard, attacks the Federal Reserve and defends the rights of gun-owners.

But the book, re-issued in 2007 during Paul's last presidential bid with a cover photograph of an ominous SWAT Team, has so far escaped scrutiny amid the latest furor over his newsletters.

In one section of the book, Paul criticized people suffering from AIDS or other contagious diseases for demanding health insurance coverage.

"The individual suffering from AIDS certainly is a victim - frequently a victim of his own lifestyle - but this same individual victimizes innocent citizens by forcing them to pay for his care," Paul wrote.

In another chapter on the rights of individuals outside of government – the central theme of Paul's libertarian philosophy - he sharply criticized the "absurdity" of politicians who try to bestow differing rights on various social and ethnic groups.

It's dangerous to craft a separate set of rights for groups like Hispanics, African-Americans, children, employees and the homeless, Paul wrote.

"Until all these terms are dropped and we recognize that only an individual has rights the solution to the mess in which we find ourselves will not be found," Paul explained.

"Every year new groups organize to demand their 'rights,'" he continued. "White people who organize and expect the same attention as other groups are quickly and viciously condemned as dangerous bigots. Hispanic, black, and Jewish caucuses can exist in the U.S. Congress, but not a white caucus, demonstrating the absurdity of this approach for achieving rights for everyone."

Paul also defended the rights of an individual to "control property and run his or her business as he or she chooses," without interference from "the social do-gooder."

In a passage first flagged by the Houston Chronicle in 2007, Paul then claimed that sexual harassment should not be a violation of one's employment rights.

"Employee rights are said to be valid when employers pressure employees into sexual activity," Paul wrote. "Why don't they quit once the so-called harassment starts? Obviously the morals of the harasser cannot be defended, but how can the harassee escape some responsibility for the problem? Seeking protection under civil rights legislation is hardly acceptable."

Paul's campaign manager Jesse Benton defended the book and said the candidate "has been speaking out for decades that rights do not come from belonging to a group."

"Rights come because we are all individuals, endowed by our creator, and Americans must look beyond race or creed and recognize that we all deserving of the same Liberty," Benton told CNN in an email. "This truth is a tenant of natural law and the only way we will achieve a color blind and truly free society."

Stop linking this crap. Will only generate more exposure on google search and give more ammo to the weasels.

Maybe post the content but not the link, since you`ve already read it.

As usual Ron is correct. I didn't really read the comments, only a few, but it would be sad if people read that and thought he was wrong.

This is a good sign. They see Paul winning and are trying last ditch attempt to hijack votes.

CNN is really afraid of a Paul victory on Tuesday.....a real hit piece on the Front Page of CNN's Website right now....
It's disguised as a hit piece, except most of what Paul said is true, and almost everyone who read the article it realizes it.

Though the intent of the article may have been malicious, the article itself (outside of the sex harrassment stuff), seems pretty harmless to me.

The point, though, is that it's on the front page. It doesn't matter what the content is, or whether it's right or wrong. If CNN put up a headline on their front page saying, "Paul discovered to be the shooter of Abraham Lincoln, not Booth," people are stupid enough that they'll believe it without even reading the article. Once the headline gets out, no matter what the facts are, the damage is done. So yeah, the article may not be true, but the headline is what matters, the headline is what counts.

Totally agree with you there. We're dealing with a public with the attention span of an ADD-diagnosed 8 year-old bully on crack.

You know, I've been guilty of saying things like that before, and I think it's time we get over it. Apparently more than 20% of IOWA voters are smarter than we've been giving the general public credit for. Perhaps people have a better ability to see the truth than we give them credit for -- once they hear the opposing viewpoint.

I say this because if "the public" as a whole really does have the attention span of an ADD-diagnosed 8-year--old bully on crack, we're all wasting our time, Dr. Paul included.

But I think what we're seeing in those places where the message is getting out is that "the public" is considerably smarter than that.

I have to believe that more and more people see a headline like that from CNN and simply roll their eyes.

Or we can all pack it up and call it a lost cause now, and save ourselves a lot of grief down the road.

I'd rather depend on the intelligence of my fellow man.

I'm not sure how this can be seen as negative. Socialists will read this and think poorly of Ron, but anyone opposed to socialism will read this and think more favorably of Ron.

A great article in my opinion, the real danger is Ron Paul supporters cowering under the pressure of Political Correctness. Don't let anyone intimidate you, in fact, intimidate the intimidators.

Believe me, it will get dirtier the closer to caucus-day you come. I'm not a citizen of the USA, yet I support Ron Paul because i've seen the political mediabias in my own country. We had in the last election a party that was about to for the first time break the threshold for parliament. On Election day the second biggest Newspaper ran a whole cover with that party's ballot paper trashed and cigarette-burned in a street gutter.

That's how desperate the forces of the media and political elite are. They will use all means necessary to stop Dr. Ron Paul from becoming the nominee because he represents real change. It's not a coincidence that they use the racist-card to stop him, this is in fact rather normal considiring how they've operated in Europe so far to stop similar movements. I'm sorry if this was a little off topic but i just wanted to share a similar experience :)

Welcome to the forums!

I am also not from the states but I am addicted to Pauls Integrity and consistency + message of freedom, liberty and antiwar, and I cant believe the treatment Paul has recieved from the mainststream media ....

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Mainstream media will Pick the candidate for president. Not the people.
