I am inspired by the Ridley Report videos that have been posted here, and I wanted to know if anyone knows of a website or series of websites that detail a citizen's rights with regard to police encounters. For example, when do I/do I not have to produce identification papers, under what circumstances must I obey a police order to "step out of the car", etc. I want to educate myself as much as possible with regard to my rights, and any resources that you guys can post here would be greatly appreciated.

I think this kind of information, knowing your rights and exercising them, is paramount to maintaining/returning to a free society.

Thanks!

These days, better to just go ahead and do what you're asked to do no matter what. "Step out of the car", "Show me your ID" and answer any basic questions that you might be able to answer. These days some trigger happy cop might just get pissed and either taze you or shoot and kill you, and it's all over. Best to just comply and be cordial, just as if you were sitting at a tea party. No need to be defensive and all that. If they break any laws, you can always come back on them and take action after the situation is over. Too many people get all defensive and clam up, and this just makes the fuzz freak out and think you're guilty of something. Of course don't let yourself be violated, but just be cooperative if you have nothing to hide and you'll live. Maybe.

'Tis a sad police state we live in...

Stop carrying the government's ID. The ID is not yours, you are just using it. Since you have stopped carrying it, you can say that you don't have ID because you don't.
When asked for a SS number? Once again you don't have one. Police can ask you to do anything. Should you do their request is another story. If you are a free person, you are not required to do anything. They want you to comply so they can get you to waive your rights. Ask them if you are free to go. If not they are "detaining" you for interrogation..er questioning. Anything you say can and will be used against you. By the time the policy enforcer has told you this, it is too late.

Keep in mind it's against the law to operate a car without a valid license...

I have seen the cops harassing lawyers trying to defend someone in the street regarding their rights. Sometimes you just can't win and it is better to be cooperative.

1. I don't remember the case i.d., but the Supreme Court back in the late 70s/early 80s ruled you don't have to show i.d. when walking down the street, though you may well have to correctly identify yourself.

2. If pulled over, pull into a parking lot (private property) to "stop out of traffic where it's safer". Get out and lock your car behind you. This can prevent them from gaining added revenue by impounding your car and can prevent them from searching it. Only the property owner can have your car removed, and can have a private firm do it rather than the city's. If told to get back in the car, do so, but have the door ready to lock. Leave it ajar and hand your credentials out through the open door. They don't have to know if the window works or not.

3. The correct answer to "Mind if I look in your car" is:

Help yourself, {sir/ma'am}--provided you have a warrant. Otherwise, I think I'll just enjoy the Contitutional rights my (name a relative) fought in (name a war) to preserve for me, thank you very much. I know you're just trying to do your job, but this is still America by the grace of God and you have no probable cause.

That sounds similar to what Luis Ewing does. But he takes a copy of the vehicle laws out and lock his keys in the car.

He ask the cops to point to which laws he has broken. They never can (it's all commercial law).
