If so, I'll be out there with them.

Updated 7/30: No pact yet for local UPS workers

A Chicago-area Teamsters union is still without a new contract as an authorized strike, set for Friday (Aug. 1), looms .

Teamsters Local 705 -- which represents workers at UPS hubs in Palatine, Northbrook, Franklin Park and elsewhere in the Chicago area --voted July 20 to authorize the strike, after rejecting a contract offer by the company earlier in the month, according to a union official.

The two sides are at the bargaining table again today, and will continue to meet through Thursday, Local 705 secretary-treasurer Steve Pocztowski said in a telephone interview Wednesday (July 30).

The union, which represents 11,000 UPS employees in the Chicago area (1,200 in Palatine), is seeking a five-year contract.

Teamsters Local 710, which represents other UPS employees, reached an agreement with UPS Wednesday (July 30).

UPS is following a similar pattern to its past rounds of negotiations with the Teamsters, UPS spokesman Norman Black said.

Typically, he explained, the national Teamsters union -- representing about 220,000 UPS employees -- negotiates its contract first. Then the only two union locals not part of the larger union, 705 and 710, both in the Chicago area, complete their contracts.

According to the Local 705's Web site, the union's UPS membership "overwhelmingly authorizes 705 administration to call for a strike if it deems it necessary; 93 percent of more than 3,000 members say yes to a strike."

The vote results were 2,993 to 232 union members in favor of the authorizing administration to strike, the Web site stated.

UPS does not have a specific contract offer to present at the meetings, but through negotiation a contract will eventually be agreed upon, Black said.

Negotiations on the agreement could continue after the current six-year deal expires at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, Black said.

Other UPS hubs in Illinois include Addison, Bedford Park, Chicago, Decatur, Hodgkins, Rockford and Rock Falls.

Area UPS workers brace for strike over pay, benefits

A strike by United Parcel Service workers could hit the Chicago metropolitan area next week.

Teamsters Local 705 will launch a strike a week from today against the world's biggest package delivery company if the two sides aren't able to reach agreement on a new contract, said the local's Secretary-Treasurer Steve Pocztowski.

The union represents roughly 11,000 drivers, package handlers and other part-time and full-time UPS workers in the Chicago area, where the hourly pay currently ranges between roughly $8.50 and $28, Pocztowski said.
Talks also are under way between UPS and Teamsters Local 710 in Chicago, which represents about 6,000 workers. But no strike authorization vote has been set by that local, according to UPS. The local couldn't be reached for comment.

Local 705 workers voted overwhelmingly Sunday to authorize a strike if a fair agreement isn't reached. It is seeking a $1-an-hour wage increase across the board and a $1-an-hour increase in benefits, sad Pocztowski, a former UPS driver.

UPS offered a 30-cent-an-hour increase, he said, an offer Pocztowski labeled "an insult."

Besides pay and benefits, remaining issues include subcontracting work and job security, Pocztowski said.

The six-year UPS contracts at Local 710 and 705 expire at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 1.

UPS spokesman Norman Black said it's not unusual for a strike authorization vote to be taken as a contract expiration nears. He said the company is confident "we're going to get a contract that rewards our people" at Local 710 and 705 and that is good for the company and its customers.

UPS negotiated a five-year national agreement last year covering roughly 220,000 workers elsewhere that boosted wages 2.7 percent and also increased benefits, Black said.

UPS and Local 705 are scheduled to meet again July 29 and 31, Pocztowski said.

"We are done with them at 4:30 p.m. on the 31st," he said, if an agreement is not reached.

My union had us out on strike for five months a few years ago (not UPS). We can never hope to recapture the wages and benefits we lost over that time. Of course, we did not think it could possibly go on that long. Is it reasonable for the employer to afford another two dollars an hour for workers in the face of much higher fuel costs? Job security includes the economic viability of your employer- which the airlines have struggled with. http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080722/BUSINESS/80722027 I would encourage the Union reps to continue discussions as long as some progress seems to be going on. I am still with my union and just wanted to share my own experiences. Strikes, particularly during economically unstable times, should not be entered into lightly. I do hope things work out for you.

I hear they reached a settlement. Congratulations. Concessions plus an extra vacation week.

I just voted yes on the new Teamsters 705 contract with UPS. Word is that Hoffa is a bit peeved that 705 got so much more than the national Teamsters-UPS contract. Chicago Teamsters are the toughest out there.:)

Not all unions are communist. If it's all voluntary it isn't, at least.

At UPS, by signing the contract, at least here in Chicago, you are involuntarily put into the union. I tried my hardest by asking my HR rep to not include me into the teamsters. But like any union, they usurp your wages as usual and you have little representation.

I know. I worked at UPS in this town before. Those bastards never protected me when I needed workman's comp. Fuck unions.
