US Vice President Dick Cheney says he is not concerned about the views the American public holds on the long-drawn-out war in Iraq.

In an interview with ABC's Good Morning America, when the White House correspondent said polls show that two-third of Americans believe the war is not worth fighting, Cheney responded with a 'so?'
When the shocked correspondent asked if he was not concerned about what the Americans think, Cheney flatly said 'No. I think you cannot be blown off course by the fluctuations in the public opinion polls.'

Earlier on Tuesday, in an address the American troops in Iraq, Cheney claimed the longer the Iraq war goes on, the more Iraqi people 'trust' and feel 'better' about Americans.

This is while a BBC/ABC/ARD/NHK poll shows that 46 percent of Iraqis have no confidence whatsoever in the American occupiers and only four percent have a 'great deal of confidence' in US forces.

Another newly released poll by CNN shows that the American public's support for the war has sharply plummeted from 68 percent in 2003 when the war began to 36 percent.

I suppose when another half million Iraqi's and another 4,000 troops die in Iraq, people will being to see how great a country we are.

It doesn't amaze me that he would say this, but it does amaze me how a great deal of people will give this a free pass. Maybe they'll shake their heads and say 'that's Dick!' but nothing else. Now, if their local city official or whatever were to say they didn't care about public opinion when it came to building a new stadium or a school levy or somesuch, they'd be all up in arms and ready to tar and feather the bastard. Hilarious.

Saw this as a reply to the same article on a another forum, thought it was great:

CHENEY: On the financial front, I think there’s a general consensus that I've made major mula on my Halliburton holdings, and in that regard the surge has worked. That’s been a major success.

RADDATZ: Two-third of Americans say your profits are not worth the lives of our soldiers.

CHENEY: So?

Of course he is right. We elect people to represent us in government to isolate government from the wild fluctuations in public opinion. I expect government officials to do what they think is right and stick by it until it's finished. I don't want them changing course every time public opinion shifts to 51% against what they are doing. If they operated like that why not just have a pure democracy? Besides, it's not like an overwhelming majority are damanding an end to the war in Iraq. In fact I saw a poll the other day that showed 53% support for the war.
