Charlie Daniels dies at age 83

I'd much preferred Carl remain and Rob go the way of the dodo to his cell in the ninth circle that so eagerly awaits his arrival.

Ah well.

At least Rob gave us The Princess Bride.

The Charlie Daniels Band was one of the groups I used to listen to endlessly in highschool while doing homework (and as little hw as possible).

One underrated song not mentioned is The Legend Of Wooley Swamp (spooky, but for a younger set)

Still in Saigon. This was written while Vietnam was still in the minds of many. It's also when SOF magazine was still being published.

Forgot all about “Still in Saigon”, good tune! Thanks for posting that.

I saw Charlie live in Wheeling West Virginia in the early nineties. He became a a Christian man and in the concert he changed the lyrics in “Long Haired Country Boy”
The line;
I get stoned in the morning, I get drunk in the afternoon.... he changed to;
I get up in the the morning, I get down in the afternoon

Next line he changed was;
I don’t want much of nothing at all but I will take another toke... he changed to;
I don’t want much of nothing at all but I will take another joke

Great concert,
RIP Charlie Daniels

I never thought any of the original lyrics were unchristian.

Good tune!

I kinda remembered that but it was a long time ago... But I did look and here is a quote from and interview with him from SongFacts;

This song, about a guy with a very passive attitude who lies around all day doing nothing, was originally written very tongue-in-cheek. Because it contained references to drugs and drinking, however, Charlie Daniels felt it was inappropriate to play it during live shows for several years. In a Songfacts interview with Daniels, he said, "Things have gotten so serious and it's such a big problem with drugs and alcohol with kids, and it just went against my Christian feelings to actually do anything that somebody could construe with promoting that lifestyle, or those things, the alcohol and drugs."

It wasn't until many years later that he decided to change some of the words so he felt he could begin playing it in his live shows again. "The song was such a big part of our repertoire and was always just a popular song for us to do. And people kept wanting it, so I changed 'I get stoned in the morning, I get drunk in the afternoon' to 'I get up in the morning, I get down in the afternoon,' which means the same thing. I wish I had done that to start with."
