The Church is not anti-death penalty, that's a recent innovation and is not part of Catholic social doctrine. The Church permits the death penalty, but modern theologians (not all, but most) and most of the hierarchy (not all) favor the new anti-death penalty approach. Personally I'm for the death penalty and it is Catholic doctrine. I would leave out the death penalty aspect of how to appeal to Catholics.
Also, the Church is not anti-war, but teaches the Just War Doctrine, which I was blown away when Ron Paul mentioned the doctrine of Just War.
The reason why "Catholics" like socialist candidates is because they are not Catholics and only profess to be by baptism, not by believing in the Catholic Church.
Orthodox Catholics should be approached on the grounds of the Just War Doctrine of the Catholic Church, less gov't interference as all conservative/orthodox Catholics cannot stand Big Brother gov't, and his stance state rights over federal rights. Many orthodox Catholics are mamby-pamby on immigration and think we are helping the poor, not our country going broke and poor.
