Dear Doug,
While I agree with most of your website's content and have read on and off over the years... I'm afraid I can no longer do so...
I find your recent piece about Congressman Ron Paul in Reps' kin live large on campaign funds to be completely misleading and unfair to the good doctor, not to mention mean-spirited and insulting to him and his supporters.
The practice of employing relatives with campaign funds certainly can be abused but according to the facts of the report, there's no evidence of that being the case regarding Dr. Paul...
RON E. PAUL (R-TX): Ranking member of the Subcommittee on Domestic and International
Monetary Policy, Trade, and Technology of the House Committee on Financial Services.
Rep. Paul’s campaign committee, Committee to Re-elect Ron Paul,1 as well as his
leadership PAC, Liberty PAC,2 have paid his family members.
Lori Pyeatt (daughter):
• In the 2006 election cycle, Rep. Paul’s campaign committee paid his daughter, Lori
Pyeatt, $36,097 in salary and $601 in reimbursements. In addition, Rep. Paul’s
leadership PAC paid Ms. Pyeatt $20,121 in salary and $2,239 in travel reimbursements.
She is listed as the treasurer of the PAC from 2002-2006.
• In the 2004 election cycle, the campaign committee paid Ms. Pyeatt $53,661 in salary
and $712 in reimbursements. In addition, Rep. Paul’s PAC paid Ms. Pyeatt $3,000 in
salary.
• In the 2002 election cycle, the campaign committee paid Ms. Pyeatt $48,711 in salary
and $241 in travel reimbursements.
Johnnie Leblanc (daughter Joy Leblanc’s father-in-law):
• In the 2006 election cycle, Rep. Paul’s campaign committee paid Johnnie LeBlanc
$2,282 in salary.
• In the 2004 election cycle, the campaign committee paid Mr. LeBlanc $111 in salary.
Nora Leblanc (daughter Joy Leblanc’s mother-in-law):
• In the 2006 election cycle, Rep. Paul’s campaign committee paid Nora LeBlanc $8,726 in
salary and $5,165 in reimbursements.
Joy Leblanc (daughter):
• In the 2004 election cycle, Rep. Paul’s campaign committee paid his daughter, Joy
LeBlanc, $500 for a photo shoot.
Matt Pyeatt (grandson):
• In the 2004 election cycle, Rep. Paul’s campaign committee paid his grandson, Matt
Pyeatt, $450 for recording equipment.
These all look to be perfectly reasonable payments for reasonable services... If you have evidence to the contrary, it would be a good time to share it... Otherwise do not smear Dr. Paul who is for all intents and purposes the most respectable member of our Congress.
You neglected to mention that:
97% of Paul's campaign funds have come from individuals, not corporations and lobbyists, by far the largest portion for any member of Congress.
Dr. Paul returns a portion of his allotted expenses for running his Congressional Office every year back to the government.
Paul does not participate in the Congressional Pension Plan that he is entitled to because he does not believe in it.
Paul has never participated in a Government paid or PAC sponsored junket.
You claim to know all about Dr. Paul but you neglected to include all this pertinant information about him in your little hit piece... but of course then, had it included all the facts and accurate information it wouldn't have been a hit piece at all... instead of a pile of hollow insults and rubbish which is truly what it was.
If your intentions were to slow or weaken the momentum of the Paul campaign I think you'll be disappointed as Dr. Paul's message of liberty, limited government, and sane foreign policy continues to spread like wildfire to a receptive war-weary public dissatisfied with the status quo. An inside the beltway hack like yourself would do well to document the success of the good doctor's inspiring campaign instead of maliciously smearing him...
Thank you.
Sincerely,
