Buying Gold

I'm making my last big jump out of digitized paper. I already have, and am still adding to, a pile of silver. I'm ready to go for the gold, so to speak. :)

My silver is all 1 oz rounds and 10 oz bars. I have avoided Eagles and other coin silver because of the premium. I'm after silver not pretty.

However, I'm not so sure with gold. I'm oddly enough not loving the gold bullion products I see, at least in my price range. Krugerrands and Gold Eagles are actually kind of nice looking, but they are not "fine" gold. Eagles have silver and copper along with the gold, Krugerrands do too, as far as I know. But! I discovered gold Maples and Buffaloes. Both are 1 oz fine. Buffaloes are almost $15 dollars more than Maples. How to explain that?

In any event any suggestions for someone making a small, 10 to 20 oz buy?

Buffs and Maples would be an excellent choice. Krugerrands are the exact same metal content as Eagles. You won't have any problem with any of these coins really. All recognizable worldwide. If it was me I'd go for Buffs/Maples.

The Canadian gold is .9999 pure which imho makes it more valuable. For electronic applications its very helpful. Beware, it will scratch easier though as well.

Also, a 10-20 oz purchase of gold is not very small in my book lol. You must be well off.

Not particularly. This will pretty much represent my life savings (along with my silver). 300 ounces of silver and 20 ounces of gold may sound like a lot, but at 56 years old staring at the collapse of an empire it barely seems enough. We have challenging times ahead, my friend.

I hope you have other investments as well, like a good store of food and tools to protect yourself.

I like the maples.

In case you aren't aware (and for anyone else reading), there are options for smaller units, like grams. They might make it easier for trades if/when the dollar collapses.
I'd suggest putting most of your investment in stuff like the ounce maples, but get a handful of smaller ones like One Tenth Gram Gold Card or Half Gram Gold Card.
[Note: Shameless plug of my own business.]

Also remember that whatever the purity is you still get 1 troy oz of gold. An eagle weighs more than a buffalo but both contain the same amount of gold.

I'm working on it. I have a possibility of buying into some productive farm land, but that is not going to happen for at least a couple of years. The gold is a way to store what wealth I have until the time comes. In the meantime I do have at least a short term bolt hole.

I like the maples.

Yeah, the more I look the more I like.

Good direction IMO.

Unsolicited advice: If you have enough for 20 ounces of gold, I'd suggest getting a 10 ounce BAR and then using the rest of the cash for more silver.

Why would you buy silver instead of gold?

Don't get buffalos, they cost too much, if you want .9999 gold just get Canadian Maples or Austrian Gold Philharmonics.

I personally like the look of Gold Eagles, plus they're harder and don't get worn so easily compared to .9999 gold.
Plus I like having a picture of lady liberty compared to a monarch :)
But to each his own.

I found a great video series on purchasing precious metals.

The biggest things I learned from that series just before I bought gold/silver 2 years ago was where to go to get it, some terminology, and that the smaller the unit of precious metal the harder it is to counterfeit (e.g. avoid things larger than coins due to ease of counterfeiting).

Silver does have more potential, I certainly agree with that. I got over half my silver in "junk silver" (older U.S. coins that are 90% silver).

I think have at least 1 of each of: Eagle, Maple, Krugerrand. I don't like one over the other. They all have 1oz of gold. But a greedy little voice in my head really likes the Maple because having .9999 pure gold sounds so cool :)

Well, I decided on gold Maples. I like that they are both coins and bullion, but not as pricey as the Eagles (not as pretty either :()

I'm getting them from APMEX. I realize they have high premiums, but this time around the shipping is free and they have always been reliable and I just don't have the time to try and save a couple hundred bucks that really aren't going to matter in the long run. I'm also pretty sure that when it over $2,000 / oz the exact price I spent at $1,600 really won't matter.

I also rounded out my silver. I'm already thinking I should have bought more silver and less gold, but it is what it is.
