Buying from an individual

Just a quick question - someone is asking me to send them a copy of my photo id BEFORE I go look at a rifle so they can make sure I am a legit buyer for a shotgun.

Why are you going to look at a rifle if you are wanting to buy a shotgun? This makes no sense to me.

Federal law states that a non-licensed person cannot knowingly sell / transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another state. To do so is a felony. Having to show ID just to look at the gun is some ridiculous idea the seller has come up with cause he doesn't understand the laws. PASS.

I do not understand that , there is no licensing in my State. I think they have some weirdo crap like that in Illinois.

As a private seller of a firearm, you have to know or be reasonably sure that the buyer is a resident of your same state and not a prohibited person. This is 18 U.S.C. This is federal, not state, but somewhere in your state laws there is going to be similar language. You're not alone - politicians don't understand the laws either and think you can buy guns over the internet and have them show up at your front door.

Honestly he is probably legit but paranoid. Whenever I have sold a personal firearm I always have done a "bill of sale" on a piece of computer paper that had a photocopy of the buyers ID and one of mine for the purchaser. With each of us having an ID of each other and them going into the sale knowing that is how I conduct business it is going to keep people honest. I am for privacy but am also for covering my ass.

As of right now,you can sell gun in VA to anybody in person without exchanging any info whatsoever, same as if you were selling them a lamp, coffee table or a can of beans. This is as it should be and I have done it countless times.

This is also known as that evil 'Gun Show Loophole' that our new Fascist Governor and Attorney General natter on about incessantly with their Fascist friends in the MSM so I don't expect it to be anything less than a major felony in the near future.
