Just a quick question - someone is asking me to send them a copy of my photo id BEFORE I go look at a rifle so they can make sure I am a legit buyer for a shotgun. It is someone local to me (10 minutes away)... Isn't that abnormal?... seems screwy to me. I can understand at the time of purchase... but before I even show up?

Anyone ever run into sellers like that? Told him we could meet at an FFL or wherever but he wants to see my ID ahead of time. Not going to do it as I don't know him either. Am just curious if others have run into sellers like this.

Seems irregular - IMO you are wise to wlk away... unless you are in some God-forsaken stink hole like NJ where you have to have a FOID just to touch a gun at a shop.

Jesus... got me thinking of NJ... just ruined my own night.

I would pass .

I have heard of it,,
I don't think I would care for it. The bullshit rules make some nervous. But it may be even worse,
They likely want to run a background check on you first.

The sall has to have a background check by law but I don't know why he would want your ID ahead of time. Doesn't make sense to me.

I wouldn't touch it.It looks like some identity theft scam.
And as you know,in Virginia you can buy guns from private owners without having to give so much as your first name.

I would think one of the benefits of buying from an individual would be not having to show ID.

Federal law says the buyer has to go through a background check unless both people know each other, I do believe.

I have bought many guns off of the trading post,a local for sale weekly, and I have never had to go through a background check.

Only time I ever see a background check is a pawn shop or something, not an individual.

in nc you are supposed to ask to see a drivers license at time of purchase... that's all. many don't. tks for the replies.

Sorry,I thought you were from VA for some reason.I don't know the laws in NC.

Private sale is a private sale.

Show the merchandise, show the money.. Deal or no deal.

anything else is hinky.

Maybe so. I don't know. But if neither party involved is a govt agent it sure feels good to break such ridiculous laws.

I'm not going to buy from an individual who demands ID. Dealer is bad enough.

Nope - unless your state law requires it. At the federal level, the check is required only when buying from a FFL, so you fill out the 4473.

Federal law states that a non-licensed person cannot knowingly sell / transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another state. To do so is a felony. Having to show ID just to look at the gun is some ridiculous idea the seller has come up with cause he doesn't understand the laws. PASS.
