How the GOP Sold Out Middle America for Corporate America
By Patrick J. Buchanan • January 31, 2014

Out of the Republican retreat on Maryland’s Eastern shore comes word that the House leadership is raising the white flag of surrender on immigration. The GOP will agree to halt the deportation of 12 million illegal aliens, and sign on to a blanket amnesty. It only asks that the 12 million not be put on a path to citizenship. Sorry, but losers do not dictate terms. Rich Trumka of the AFL-CIO says amnesty is no longer enough. Illegal aliens must be put on a path to citizenship and given green cards to work—and join unions.

Rep. Paul Ryan and the Wall Street Journal are for throwing in the towel. Legalize them all and start them on the path to citizenship. A full and final capitulation. Let’s get it over with. To understand why and how the Republican Party lost Middle America, and faces demographic death, we need to go back to Bush I.

At the Cold War’s end, the GOP reached a fork in the road. The determination of Middle Americans to preserve the country they grew up in, suddenly collided with the profit motive of Corporate America. The Fortune 500 wanted to close factories in the USA and ship production abroad—where unions did not exist, regulations were light, taxes were low, and wages were a fraction of what they were here in America. Corporate America was going global and wanted to be rid of its American work force, the best paid on earth, and replace it with cheap foreign labor. While manufacturing sought to move production abroad, hotels, motels, bars, restaurants, farms, and construction companies that could not move abroad also wanted to replace their expensive American workers.

Thanks to the Republican Party, Corporate America got it all.

Ah, Pat. Yet another whiner that criticizes, but where is the link to his proposed solution - and is it a proposal that will EVER be implemented? We need something, anything, NOW. The irony is that Obama is on track to deport more illegal immigrants than any other president in history.

ya those numbers aren't cooked at all.

like obama went to his minions and said "YOU KNOW GEORGE W. BUSH DIDN'T DEPORT ENOUGH ILLEGALS! LET'S DEPORT EVEN MORE!"

like that happened. riiiight.

In fairness to Pat, he ran for President against Bush I when Bush was the incumbent. The establishment squashed him.

What are you even talking about? Did I post that Obama 'went to his minions' etc? Ever hear of the phrase 'Red Herring'? Try to keep up. If the numbers are 'cooked' try offering a source which might contain 'non-cooked' numbers. Replying with fantasy gobledygook is useless.

The GOP isn't monolithic (neither is the DP).

It's made up of different factions, and there have always been force vectors within it. The Rockefellar Republicans and Chamber of Compromise Republicans vs the moral majority / Christian Coalition types, etc.

Gotta get stuff done my friends, NOW, its a crisis and we cant let it go to waste.

The irony is that Obama is on track to deport more illegal immigrants than any other president in history.

And there is no inflation and unemployment is dropping like a stone!

It may be a big tent, but the Rockefeller gang and big biz/big banks/MIC controllers are the perpetual ringmasters. They'll let the vectors run about and play, but remain in control of the money, the media, and intelligence agencies that determines who has the inside track to power. They will never relinquish control to let the liberty, Tea Party or other factions ever get to play ringmaster.

In the first few years of his administration, Obama was actually deporting record numbers. The rate was lower the last couple years. Article from end of 2012:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpoli...nistration-deported-record-1-5-million-people

Although President Obama supports setting a path to citizenship for many illegal immigrants, his administration deported a record 1.5 million of them in his first term.

In addition, the latest data released by the government in recent days show that an unprecedented 409,849 people were deported for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.

The increase from the previous year occurred despite policy changes ordered by Obama to reduce the deportations of otherwise law-abiding illegal immigrants.

Roughly 55 percent, or more than 225,000 people, deported in the past year were convicted of crimes such as drug offenses and driving under the influence. Immigration officials note that they deported nearly twice as many convicted criminals as in the year before Obama took office. That year, in 2008, criminals made up about a third of all deportations.

The administration says the figures demonstrate that the shift in enforcement to focus on criminals is working.

Priority cases include felons, repeat violators of immigration laws, people who have recently crossed U.S. borders illegally and those who pose a national security threat, the White House says.

Border security spending has also more than doubled under Obama (as I point out on these things though it is Congress not the President who controls spending).

Net immigration was up slightly last year but the year before it was zero so it is at extremely low levels (historicallY). http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nat...ion-levels-rising-u-s-study-article-1.1465076

The increase is within the researchers' margin of error, but Pew said the country's recession-era decrease in illegal immigration — including visa overstays and border crossings — has bottomed out. Illegal immigration peaked at 12.2 million in 2007 and dropped to 11.3 million in 2009, Pew researchers said.

There are still an estimated two million fewer illegal aliens in the country than in 2007.

Turnarounds don't count. Border Patrol doesn't deport illegals they turn them around. ICE deports. Obama is adding the turnarounds and deported compared to Bush's deported and Bush's turnarounds. Obama should be deporting more interior illegals because of the GOP state immigration laws identifying them. The Secure Communities Act or whatever it is called. Bush and Clinton could have never dreamed of identifying this many illegals. Also with DACA one of Senator Menendez Dreamer's turned out to be a sex offender so they have all these lists of illegals they can deport.

In fact, because of the Secure Communities program (which checks the fingerprints of arrestees against Department of Homeland Security databases, as well as those of the FBI), Immigration and Customs Enforcement is aware of a much larger number of illegal-alien criminals than ever before, which means deportations should be increasing.

The Republican establishment isn't worried. They will be taken care of by the corporations and lobbying groups that push this amnesty. Their futures are secure.
