Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon did not withdraw his support in plan to tighten supervision of Palestinian traveling from the West Bank from Israel, in which the first step was a pilot program to enforce separate Israeli and Palestinian bus travel in the West Bank.
The pilot program was suspended Wednesday morning by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ya'alon following widespread criticism.
In response to criticism Ya'alon said Wednesday that only security considerations were behind the plan and its aim was to inspect those entering and leaving Israel from and to the West Bank, and not to separate Jews and Palestinians. He said that a revamped version of the plan will be formulated and reintroduced.
The program, launched Tuesday, stipulated that Palestinian workers would have to return from Israel to the West Bank via the same checkpoint they left and will not be allowed to ride Israeli bus lines.
