Our government here requires licensing to broadcast material, which clearly shows that the government (illegitimately) controls the airwaves. How is that so different from what Russia does?

Licensing the airwaves is quite different from owning the media outlets. That's not to say that I don't realize what is going on with our media.

There's FCC guidelines they need to follow, but the government doesn't create/control the news like in the case of Russia Today. In the case of the United States, those media outlets are owned by the "free market," but the owners/corporations are usually a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

And as to the "Commie" scare,
Despite descriptors used, the Soviet Union was NEVER communist. It was a socialist dictatorship.
The US is a Socialist Democracy, (not much better) with the false choice between Marxist(D) or Trotsky(R) leadership.

This country has not been a free republic in my lifetime. (I would like to see that change)

You seem like you are comparing what our country has been to the Soviet Union. If that is what you are doing, I think it is asinine. Most of those people would have given anything to have just a small fraction of the freedom we had, the food we ate, and the living conditions we enjoyed.

The problem is that we let what we had slip away. Was it perfect? No. But, it was pretty damn good and far better than any other country on the face of the earth.
