RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Brat Packers are celebrating Republican Dave Brat's victory over Democrat Jack Trammell, by a sizable margin. The Randolph-Macon College economics professor easily took the 7th Congressional District seat, against his opponent, also a professor at the same college. However, Brat made it clear to his supporters, that this was their win.
During his victory speech, Brat thanked everyone for their help and hard work during the campaign. Brat took his time taking pictures and shaking hands with everyone in the crowd, during the campaign party, at the Hilton in Short Pump.
Brat ousted the sitting Republican Representative Eric Cantor, the former House Majority Leader, during the primary. The upset propelled the race into the spotlight. Brat says he held on to hope during his entire campaign.
“Back in the primary, that was the big mountain. But, I had hoped we could do it. And this one, I thought we could end strong, because we made so many relationships already,” said Brat.
Brat campaigned as an opponent of many of President Barack Obama's policies, including the Affordable Care Act. Brat aims to cut the national debt and secure the country's borders. He touts his experience in economics, and says he's proud to have run a strictly positive campaign. Brat asked all of his supporters to hold him accountable, as he says he plans to hold Washington accountable for tax dollars spent.
