Boston Globe Tweets About 'Controlled Explosions'

Aren't controlled explosions a normal tool for bomb disposal? What's the big deal?

YEah they were saying they were finding other bombs and exploding them, then later some were saying they weren't bombs, but that was what it was supposed to be at the time.

I found a page that says there were 2 controlled explosions, which seems in line with the story of a bomb drill. Weird that if that's the case, they went ahead with the 'drill' after the actual bombs went off.

And what are the odds that actual bombs would be placed at the same place and time there was a bomb drill?

I don't know about the bomb drill thing. I saw some mentions of it but I was waiting to see if there was substance in it.

is it true there was a drill? Why do these things happen while some government agency is having a "drill" eh? Wasn't that the excuse for the jet fighters not intercepting the plane crashing into the pentagon? They were too busy doing a drill for a similar scenario?

Around 3:55, the bomb squad set off a controlled explosion opposite the library.

An official tells the AP that additional devices were located, in addition to the two that exploded. It's not known if this includes the one detonated by the bomb squad.

Possibly related, at 4:27 the scanner reported a confirmed explosion at the JFK library, with no injuries reported. (This explosion must be the one mentioned in the Globe tweets).

So what we've got are two bombs going off by persons unknown and at least one set off by the authorities, which was pre-planned as part of a drill, apparently.

This is so weird. Who does a live-fire drill with bombs in the middle of a city when a marathon is being run? Who would have the balls to plant bombs right in the thick of a bunch of cops/national guard with bomb sniffing dogs? Why would they go ahead with the pre-planned explosions after the bombs went off?

Somewhere in the echo chamber, "controlled explosion" and "bomb squad" got equated with them doing some kind of a drill. If bombs go off in a city, the bomb squad gets called on anything that looks suspicious. Controlled explosion is often when the bomb squad rigs up a suspicious item, then places a giant metal box over it and sets it off.
