Boris: 'I'd rather be dead' than request EU extension

Boris in 2016 was against leaving the EU.

Boris allegedly never wanted to leave the EU

Pictures of Johnson looking shell-shocked alongside fellow Leave campaigners once the referendum result came in led many people to believe that the result was not what the former London mayor had hoped for.

In fact shortly after these pictures were taken, friends of Johnson told me that they believed he had never really wanted to leave the EU, with one long-term ally telling me that the decision to back the Leave campaign had been purely about his career.

As one friend of Johnson told me, "It was all about the leadership."

If Boris refuses to send the remainer bill to the queen or tells her to refuse royal assent the only thing parliament could do would be a vote of no confidence which would give him the election he wants and they don't.

Boris wins no matter what happens.

Boris could allow the political theater to go on until right before he's "forced" to ask for an extension. Then he can simply resign and say "Your move, remainers", with only a few days for them to do something before the clock runs out and the UK automatically leaves the EU.

No one else has a working majority behind them to become PM, and Corbyn would look terrible if he took on the role in a caretaker position and becomes "the man who blocked Brexit". That would piss off a lot of Labour voters. He would look almost as bad if he allowed someone from a smaller party to take over as PM in a caretaker role. Then he'd be "the man who doesn't want to be PM", so why vote for him?

It's hard to know for sure what is real and what is "staged" in all this. In the end, I wouldn't be all that surprised if the UK ultimately stays in the EU, even though Brexit-in-name-only seems more likely to me. Regardless, new elections must be coming rather soon.
