Borders customers will start writing the bookseller’s final chapter today.
The 40-year-old chain won bankruptcy court approval yesterday to launch a liquidation sale at its 399 remaining stores, including its massive store in Boston’s Downtown Crossing.
Borders’ blowout will be handled by Boston-based Gordon Brothers Group and other liquidators in a deal that will likely bring creditors between $250 million and $284 million.

“This marks the end of an era and we thank our customers for their patronage over our 40-year history,” Borders President Mike Edwards said in a statement.
The liquidators will be unloading some $700 million worth of inventory — books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, games, calendars and even the shelves and furnishings — at discounts of up to 40 percent. Borders gift cards will be honored throughout the sale. All sales will be final.
Borders, which employs 10,700 people, was working on a deal late yesterday to sell 30 to 35 of its stores to Books-a-Million, a 200-store chain that will become the second largest U.S. bookseller behind Barnes & Noble.

Does it mean one can also order online and get a discount?

40% off Bordre's prices are what I can already pay on Amazon. Good riddance. Amazon and online retailers have cornered the book market, and e-readers competing against that. ITunes is obseleting CD purchasing, and Netflix for DVDs. Borders is not a victim of the economy, just obsolescence.

My 5 year old will remember Borders just like I barely remember Woolworths, Kresgees, and Montgomary Wards.

Yeap Big Box is Done. Best Buy will eventually be a future causality if they don't secure authorized dealer for everything.

You had to bring up Monkey Wards... you ruin my memories :( ;)

Yeah, screw Netflix and streaming in general. Total lack of decent titles to watch--DVDs are here to stay for a long time. It sucks people are obsessed with this digital shit when digital information corrupts and fails consistently. Instead of owning a library of DVDs/Blu-Rays, you'll have to rummage through an endless digital library. How easy was it to walk through Best Buy/Wal-Mart in search of a random movie that catches your eye only to now have to press "Next.....Next....Next..." on your Netflix?

Digital...bleh...I own a Kindle, but I won't be purchasing Netflix. $7.99/month for shit titles for streaming. They tried phasing out DVDs and failed. Most people favor DVDs over streaming, and it'll be like that for a long while.

10 bucks a month gets me about 6-8 movies mailed to my house. As far as i see it i'm saving 50-100 dollars to not have to buy all these DVDs in the store, and i get the added bonus of all the streaming bullshit (Which yes has a very shitty collection... but it still has your occasional Sleepers/ Rageing Bull/ entire George Carlin collection). Sounds like a good service to me.
