Not much surprises me these days but I am genuinely shocked he was given the death sentence. For practical purposes, it's rarely carried out in modern times as the required appeals process takes forever but still.

eta: I see that federal doesn't require the appeals process but once it is invoked in modern times, the convicted never see execution.
