Boehner: Cruz is 'Lucifer in the flesh'

When it comes to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, even a few months’ time out of Congress has done little to lessen former Speaker John Boehner’s contempt for his former Capitol Hill colleague.

“Lucifer in the flesh,” Boehner told an audience at Stanford on Wednesday night, according to the Stanford Daily. “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.”

In fact, Wednesday night was not the first occasion that Boehner has compared Cruz to “Lucifer,” using the epithet last month during a question-and-answer session with reporters at the Futures Industry Association conference in Boca Raton, Florida.

As far as Donald Trump goes, Boehner remarked that he had golfed with Trump for years and that the two are “texting buddies.”

On fellow Ohioan John Kasich, Boehner was magnanimous.

The governor “requires more effort on my behalf than all my other friends … but he’s still my friend, and I love him,” Boehner said, according to the report.

On the Democratic side of the race, Boehner said that while Hillary Clinton would win the party’s nomination, Bernie Sanders is a likable guy and the most honest politician in the race. He also apparently impersonated the former secretary of state, saying, “Oh I’m a woman, vote for me,” while reportedly later noting her accomplishments.

Boehner’s comments also included a reference to the ongoing FBI investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was at the State Department, speculating on what might happen if the scandal widens.

“Don’t be shocked … if two weeks before the convention, here comes Joe Biden parachuting in and Barack Obama fanning the flames to make it all happen,” the former speaker said.

5 Signs Donald Trump IS The Establishment...From The Last 24 Hours Alone

While Donald Trump’s passionate support base – and has-been political insiders like Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich, and Chris Christie -- insist that Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is an establishment cuck in thrall to the elites, the evidence shows precisely the opposite: Trump is a political insider who will cut awful deals with Democrats and provide establishment Republicans with a four-year back rub. All the insiders know it. And they’re laughing openly at the rubes who buy their “Cruz is the establishment” brand of bull.

Here are five pieces of evidence from the last 24 hours:

John Boehner Backs Trump, Hates Cruz. Ultimate establishment Republican former Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) was so disliked by the conservative wing of his own party that he took retirement rather than being ousted internally from his position as speaker. Now he’s spoken out about Cruz and Trump. Here’s consummate insider Boehner on Cruz: “Lucifer in the flesh…I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.” Here’s Boehner on Trump: “texting buddies.” By the way, Boehner says he’d vote for Trump over Hillary, but he wouldn’t vote for Cruz over Hillary. Orange people gotta stick together, apparently.

Trump Defends Mitch McConnell Against Cruz. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has cut deals with President Obama on everything from funding for Obamacare to funding on executive amnesty. He’s one of the least popular Republican figures in America among the Republican base. Cruz called him a “liar” on the floor of the Senate. Yesterday, Trump ripped Cruz for doing that: Cruz, said Trump called “the top man, who’s actually a good guy, Mitch McConnell, a liar. You don’t do things like that!” This is not the first time Trump has defended McConnell from Cruz. Remember, Trump has called Cruz, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Jeb! Bush, and everyone else who has ever opposed him a liar.

Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) Is Praising Him. After Trump gave a wildly incoherent but relatively subdued – for him – speech about foreign policy yesterday, plaudits began arriving from establishment figures including Senator Corker (“a very good foreign policy speech”). Corker, of course, is the delightful fellow who came up with a plan to enshrine President Obama’s Iran deal as law without a Senate treaty vote.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) Is Backing Him. On Wednesday, Cornyn – again, as establishment a Republican as you will ever see – said of Trump, “I think he could change the electoral map in ways we haven’t seen before. This disrupts the usual Republican vs. Democrat, conservative vs. liberal paradigm, and I think we don’t know how this will all play out. I think it will be OK. You don’t need to despair.” Well, not if you’re not a conservative, at least.

CBS Endorses “Moderate” Trump. Here’s CBS News’ Will Rahn on Trump’s candidacy:

Trump also has one main advantage, which is that he’d be probably the most moderate nominee in decades. Now, Trump is not normally what we think of when we think of moderates – “reactionary moderate” is perhaps the best term to describe him. But border walls and Muslim bans aside, Trump really most closely resembles an old-school northeastern centrist Republican. Trump likes the welfare state. He’s made protecting entitlements central to his pitch. It’s safe to say that he’s likely, at heart, socially liberal — the story of how he became anti-abortion, for example, doesn’t make a great deal of sense.

This is obviously true. But shhh! Don’t tell the Trumpkins, who insist Trump will break apart the traditional Washington power structure.

Trump’s politics are establishment. The establishment has been perturbed by his incapacity to control his id, but that’s about all they dislike about the man. They agree with him on policy, they know they can work with him, and they believe that he’ll enrich them and empower them so long as they properly worship at his altar.

They’re right.

And Trump’s supposedly anti-establishment are being taken for a ride.

LOL at the people who think Trump is going to be a "wrecking ball" and put his golfing buddies out of a job.

Yup. Completely delusional. Heard a "fiscal conservative" democrat call the radio yesterday talking about how he supports Trump because he's a fiscal conservative. Where do these people get the evidence of this? Trump supporters are just like the Obama supporters of 2008. They completely fabricate shit in their weak minds.

I tried posting this earlier - but my browser didn't seem to send it, and didn't have time to try again.

Good post. And strong words. Cruz seems to have this effect on people.

Trump's ten billion dollar business that he built?

Wow - people who have actually worked for Cruz are "disqualified" from saying how it was.

fyi - caring about what other people think or thinking to speaking for them - ie lots of use of we, or presuming you speak for a group, or caring if you do or that you are part of a group that does - is one of the meanings of "fear of man will prove a snare".

Kennedy also spent a large portion of the talk asking the former speaker about his time in office and his relationship with President Obama. Having been elected to office 13 times – a number which he was quick to clarify with Kennedy – Boehner said he had learned a lot from previous speakers, including Newt Gingrich and Nancy Pelosi.

Throughout the talk, Boehner frequently referenced the Freedom Caucus as the “knuckleheads” and “goofballs” in Congress. When Kennedy asked about the Democrats in Congress, Boehner asserted that both parties have their own inner-divisions.

“The thing that’s different about Republicans and Democrats is that [Democrats] do their fights behind closed doors,” the former speaker said. “Republicans are way too independent for that.”

Although he talked about the challenges of working with a partisan, gridlocked Congress, Boehner reflected positively on his relationship with Obama. Although he acknowledged that the two disagree, Boehner said the two get along well.

Haha, I like it.

Cruz: Boehner unleashed his 'inner Trump'

Ted Cruz said Thursday that former House Speaker John Boehner must have let loose his "inner Trump" when he called the Texas senator "Lucifer in the flesh."

Boehner made the remarks at Stanford University, where he also said he "never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life."

"I've never worked with John Boehner," Cruz told reporters in Indiana in reply. "Truth of the matter is, I don't know the man. I've met John Boehner two or three times in my life. If I have said 50 words in my life to John Boehner, I'd be surprised. And every one of them has consisted of pleasantries, 'Good to see you Mr. Speaker.' I've never had any substantive conversation with John Boehner in any respect."

But Cruz worked with Boehner in the late 1990s, according to a Seattle Times article identifying Cruz as "Boehner's lawyer." Boehner was suing a Democratic congressman for a tape recording of Boehner, and the case dragged on for years, as the Washington Post reported. The Post said that "Cruz didn't stay with Boehner's case long."

Cruz also told reporters in Indiana people who like Boehner would love Donald Trump as president. The senator said during the government shutdown fight of 2013, he reached out to Boehner for a meeting with him and Utah Sen. Mike Lee, but Boehner refused to meet.

"When John Boehner calls me Lucifer, he's not directing that at me. He's directing that at you," Cruz said looking into the cameras. "What Boehner is angry with me for is not anything I've ever said to him. Haven't said much of anything. What Boehner is angry with me for is standing with the American people, is energizing and encouraging House conservatives to stand with the American people and actually honor the commitments we make."

Cruz noted that Trump made donations to both Boehner and former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and suggested that Trump would bring about more of the same.

"I will say this if you're wondering who actually has stood up to Washington, I think John Boehner has made it crystal clear," Cruz said.
