Bloomberg about soda ban: ‘We’re Simply Forcing You To Understand’

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/nyc-mayo...rcing-you-to-understand-whats-better-for-you/

New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg appeared on MSNBC on Thursday to explain portions of his controversial proposed ban on soft drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces. “We’re not taking away anybody’s right to do things, we’re simply forcing you to understand that you have to make the conscious decision to go from one cup to another cup,” Bloomberg told MSNBC.

how does banning not involve taking away anything? lol

if they ban soda in large containers.. its matter of time before they ban all soda. I assume it is because its unhealthy. How come they don't ban alcohol and cigarettes? How come they dont force people to exercise? What a load of crap.

I feel bad for NY... I think they have taxes as high as here in california. sales taxes make me buy less things to be honest.. on top of income tax.

It should show that there are big government nanny-staters on both sides of the aisle.

They'll need to raise taxes to hire more cops for this. Win-win for New yorkers...lol

Bloomberg has got to be one the worst power hungry control freaks statists who has ever been elected to office in this country unbeliveable so what next on the bloombergban list? i mean really what's it gonna take for new yorkers to wake up and revolt against this nanny state garbage?

We’re not taking away anybody’s right to do things

Proof that the government considers business owners to be "nobodies", devoid of rights**

**Unless they are donating to campaigns, in which case, they are more equal than you are.

Here are at least two groups affected:

1) People that want to share a 32 oz drink because it is cheaper (e.g., a couple at a movie or take-out restaurant)

2) People that don't eat at posh restaurants with endless refills - even if those are not generally free

What I see this affecting is what you pay to get the same damn thing. To the 'big gulp" demographic, this is a huge tax/mandate. Bloomberg is of the demographic that has waitstaff bringing him whatever he wants to drink and as much of it as he wants. Naturally, the bill doesn't affect him.

It is not clear how this would affect self-serve where nobody knows if you put in diet or mixed them all up as I like to do sometimes:

The ban would apply only to sweetened drinks over 16 ounces that contain more than 25 calories per 8 ounces. (A 12-ounce can of Coke has about 140 calories. Plastic bottles of Coke and other soft drinks often contain 20 ounces.)

It wouldn't affect diet soda, any drink that's at least 70 percent juice, or one that is at least half milk or milk substitute. Nor would it apply to drinks sold in many supermarkets or convenience stores. Businesses would face fines of $200 per failed inspection.

So to get a soda over 16oz, it has to be filled with Aspartame instead of HFCS/Sugar?

Clearly none of these people ever studied any kind of austrian economics.

Raising the price of something to try to phase it out of existence will almost always drive the product to the underground (yes, black market SODA!).

The same thing has happened in New York with Cigarettes... eventually the price hits a point the free market is no longer willing to pay and savvy people find a way to get the product in from another city or state and make a profit while the average joe pays less than the state is offering.

These types of controls don't do anything but create criminals. Soda Bandits coming your way New York!!
