A small card which powers itself and can send text and pictures over a P2P network

Project has over $10 million in funding and initial testing among Bitcoin community has been positive.

No response? A card that could replace the dollar that has no tie to any infrastructure...

this is kinda big

That link did not work for me.

Do you know much about it?

Just what they have been saying on the Bitcoin forum.

At first everyone assumed it was vaporware. Then a few Bitcoin merchants met with the people behind this and were able to test it out.

It has been in the planning phase for about 5 years with a lot of funding going into it. Then the guy behind it found out about Bitcoin and saw how well it would go along with the technology and changed course.

They are shooting for having some available Q1, 2013

It should be an app on a smartphone instead of a separate device.

There are smartphone apps for sending/receiving Bitcoins already (just search your app store for Bitcoin).

But this allows for peer to peer. You need no infrastructure, no need for a cell phone plan. And it is supposed to be very cheap. Something a company could hand out at trade shows to introduce people to Bitcoins. Something you could hand to the owner of your favorite watering hole to get him to accept Bitcoin.

What's apple's record on privacy?
Can we trust that they will not aid government?
What would an iphone app do to the anonymity?
Bitcoin, at some point, will threaten to subvert the FED. I'm betting that the government will want to lean on its friends, or twist some arms when/if that happens.

All that said, I'm interested to see what kind of unintended consequences and oversights rise as a result of bitcoin.

Excellent, Im doing research on my slow Friday at work. I like what I see so far, Bitc0in looks like a real option, could be another peaceful revolution puzzle piece.

in lieu of being handed copper pennies or diMes & nickels, bitcoins at a supermarket checkout with a quick swipe???
prices could even register in mills for individual items online. bitcoin could save Uncle Sam money...ironically. i'd like
bills + half dollars + quarters, still... but many people just put pennies in a big jar or a drawer when they get home.

Makes sense. Cell phones are monitored. Heck, this would be worth it just for the communications part. Depending on it's range it could be great for backpacking as an alternative for walkie talkies. (Often there's no cell phone signal in the mountains.)

If this thing works as advertised, it would change the world. Time to buy some more bitcoin.

Since it is from "our guys" we will not say it is NWO trying to monitor our every movement.

(screw you I am not writing it is a joke... if someone doesnt understand it is he wouldnt understand even if I wrote it is.... well maybe it isnt...)

Hopefully, the feds will not be able to hack or hijack the transactions (text or financial) conducted over the card. Hopefully they won't declare mere possession of the card as contraband. Could be a lifeline for communication once/if the web is on lockdown following a declaration of martial law.

Sadly this tech is TOO revolutionary.

Obomba would hunt us all down and kill us on the spot for holding onto one of these cards. :(

I had not thought of that. In Egypt the Internet was shut down during the revolution. This could be a useful tool for such a situation.
