Birmingham News Omits Ron Paul in Super Tuesday Coverage

Everyone should call and/or email the Birmingham News about the lack of coverage for Ron Paul in todays (Sunday's) paper. He is listed NOWHERE in the Super Tuesday articles, and is NOT listed in the chart where it compares the candidates. I had multiple people at church today ask me (since I am on the ballot as a delegate) if Dr. Paul had dropped out of the race, as they were using the comparison chart to help decide who to vote for! Things like this can really influence the vote - and sink our Super Tuesday campaign!

The Birmingham News is the largest paper in Alabama, and reaches the entire state. People depend on it for election coverage - and they can make or break a campaign.

It sounds like the same thing is going on in Nashville.

Please contact the paper - the number to the editor, Tom Scarritt, is 205-325-2444 or [email protected].

The writers of the political articles are [email protected] , kfaulk@bhamnews,com , and [email protected].

The editorial editor is Bob Blaylock 205-325-2117 ([email protected])

They need to know TODAY that we want something in the paper tomorrow!!!!! This is getting ridiculous! By the way, they are endorsing McCain.

- What is the parent company of that specific paper?

- Did the chart look like this?

Front page Bham News, and pages 6 and 7.

Front page, and election coverage on pages 6 and 7. This was the only coverage in the paper. Hard to see with these pics, but I'm short on bandwidth as it is - but you get the picture!!!

Not even ONE mention of RP's name! The chart is sourced AP. I don't think the Birmingham News is a Gannett paper - maybe privately owned. Link to Meetup thread about it here: http://ronpaul.meetup.com/73/messages/boards/thread/4161832

Response from the paper:

I emailed the paper, and here is their ARROGANT response:

Thank you for your comments. And, thanks for reading our paper.

I just tried to call these clowns but the operator couldnt figure out how to route me to their voice mail. So I sent them e-mails instead.

Not an autoresponder ...

Matt - it wasn't an autoresponder. I sent two emails, and this response came about 6 hours after I sent them, and it was a reply to the second email I sent.

My letter to the Birmingham News

I am a subscriber who is not very happy:mad:

Shame on you for your bias and omission of Ron Paul from articles and editorials on Tuesday's Republican Primaries in Sunday's paper. You have treated this candidate as though he does not exist. PLEASE do not reply with some lame excuse like Congressman Paul does not meet some kind of threshold when you were giving candidates in the fall mayoral elections coverage who got less than 100 votes. Not to mention the fact that all candidates in all of the other races (all 6 in the county commission race for example...some of whom will get next to no votes) are getting equal time and coverage.

While the results in the early primaries haven't been what some supporters would like them to be, Congressman Paul has finished well enough in the early primaries and caucuses (besting some of the candidates you're giving coverage AKA free advertising to I might add) to be included in coverage in articles about the primaries.

I have been bothered in the past by the News' bias and lack of depth on substantive issues in the past, but censorship of a viable political candidate who will receive thousands of votes from Alabamians on Tuesday is just plain wrong.

Selective censorship by the media in a free society is a dangerous precedent. Congressman Paul's campaign is about freedom and unless equal coverage (that means don't bury it in the classifieds) is given to Congressman Paul in Monday or Tuesday's paper I will exercise my freedom and cancel my subscription.

Please call or fax these people for Birmingham!

No mention of Ron Paul today either, other than a small human interest story where they called him a longshot candidate. The rest of the story was about how well Romney and Obama were doing on the 'net. I've caled, faxed, and emailed all of them - please do the same. I also did the Tennessee paper.

I know one of the reporters, and I emailed him last night, and as of yet, I haven't heard back. I just said "What's the scoop on leaving out Paul" - and thought I would got a reply by now.

Good deal! Thanks for the addresses! I suggest we put ALL of those in the BCC field
so that each person gets his email without allot of other To: or CC: addresses. They'll
take it much more serious if they think they may be the only ones receiving the horde
of mails.

Send them this:

Alabama Republican Assembly Endorses Ron Paul for President

The ALRA hosted a corresponding straw poll that was open to the public while the endorsing convention was taking place. The winner of the straw poll, with 81 percent of total votes cast, was Ron Paul

http://www.centredaily.com/business/story/359275.html

This vote took place in Birmingham less than 2 weeks ago. 81% and they leave him out. That's bad. They did the same thing here in Huntsville last Sunday. They showed everyone but Dr. Paul on the cover of the Huntsville Times, and it was published the day after the Alabama Republican Assembly endorsement. Our MeetUp was about to place an ad with them the day after it came out and I made sure they knew that they lost the business.

From Mark Silverman, editor in Chief of the Tennessean:
[email protected]:
"I apologize for the omission.

The candidates' position grid we published was provided by one of our wire services. It omitted Dr. Paul. We should have caught the omission but we did not. There's no excuse on our part -- but that's what happened."
Here is my e-mail back to him:

Understandable but still inexcusable.

What are you going to do to make it right?

Save the evidence.

This is more evidence how the media is manipulating our election. Let's hope we can do a "lawsuit money bomb" and have the campaign or the grassroots file a class action suit.

I've seen enough evidence from TV and newspapers that we could win a lawsuit for sure. Save these newspapers.

ht tp://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Newspapers_show_blatant_bias_too_Sheesh

and ask them nicely to please run that ALRA endorsement on the front page since they so blatantly censored Paul. ;)
