I don't support people going bungee jumping or cliff diving but if they survive I am satisfied with the outcome.
I don't support people betting the farm on a roll of the dice but if they win and stop I am satisfied with the outcome.

I will not be satisfied with the outcome of Trump's gambit until SCOTUS rules against the executive bans and limits bureaucratic "interpretation" of laws.

It's pretty easy to see how things would have turned out the other way. If Trump hadn't tarnished the 2A, then Trump wouldn't have tarnished the 2A. Which itself is a good enough reason not to tarnish the 2A.

With that said, it's also extremely unlikely that any gun legislation would have gotten past his veto.

So in reality, if Trump hadn't issued an EO that expanded powers and tarnished the 2A, it's not like "worse laws" would have been passed.

Trump's veto of the last NDAA (which Congress overrode) indicates there is some doubt about whether worse laws would have passed but I tend to agree on that point and said he shouldn't have done it.
What Trump gambled for and hopefully will win is a firm limitation on executive branch regulatory power and possibly an expansion of 2ndA protections from the current second class status they receive.

What is certain is that the Demoncrats would have tried this no matter what Trump did or didn't do.
