I made my son walk to school after he missed his ride (early period) and missed the bus (normal arrival). It wasn't far, maybe three miles. He wanted a ride from me but nope, you're going to walk and you're going to be late. Like many kids these days, he really didn't know where he was going so I took some time to help him understand how he could use the map on the cell phone, etc. He definitely thought I was the biggest jerk in the world that morning. I didn't expect the lesson to take immediately, maybe years, maybe never, but I kid you not, that same afternoon when he returned he thanked me for making him walk. Owning your decisions, whether enjoyable or not, can be very empowering and high school kids need that, IMHO. We're friends when I don't need to parent, but I parent when it's time to parent.
That's why I like being a grandfather. As a dad, it is always time to parent. As a grandad, that's not my job. My job is to love and provide wisdom that will stay locked into their memories.
