Non sequitur. The rock is "the faith of his[Peter's] confession"(John Chrysostom). If you mean to say that the Church is built on Christ and maintained by the apostles and their successors, I agree with that.

I mean what the passage says. The Church is built BY Christ, based on the profession of all believers (of which Peter's was an example). It is not 'maintained' by the believers, the Church IS the body of believers.

Those who claim a church is something more than its members, like those who claim a nation is something more than its citizens, are those who wish to prevent the church or the nation from bending the institution to better serve their needs.

It is an authoritarian sentiment. It is the philosophy of those who, for whatever reason, don't wish their Position and Title to become meritocratic. And those who don't want the responsibility of weighing that merit.

Can't speak about "nations", but the Church has always tended to Her own in need. Tithes and offerings pay for all manner of things-food for the hungry, various outreach programs, etc.

Certainly. There is such a thing as legitimate authority. Our Lord has it, His apostles had it, and the Church He founded at Pentacost has it. The arbitrary authority of earthly princes is another matter-I care not a whit about them.

Stop right there. A church is people. The Church Of (insert arbitrary date here) is dead. And all churches--all churches-- have their would-be earthly princes.

As for the history and traditions of a church, so far as they serve God's will and their modern parishioners, they have value--and no farther.

Just like a nation.

Believe as you wish. I'll take the word of thousands of saints all over the world from the time of the apostles on over yours, thnx.

And what do those thousand dead people say that contradicts me?

The RC church has a couple millennia of tradition and a few thousand canonized dead people behind it, but you aren't listening to them. So apparently you can think for yourself. Did I contradict your host of Orthodox saints?

They recognize and insist on the authority of the Church.

The Roman Church is schismatic and has been since 1054. (google "Great Schism") I recognize the saints, martyrs, and other important figures Rome and the East have in common prior to that, such as Augustine. I don't see where I contradict Orthodox teaching. Feel free to point it out if you find it with citations. I'm always learning. I contradict plenty of RC teaching because they teach a lot of heresy and error post-schism.
