I'm a big guy(6' 4" , 250LBs)and I have bad knees. I have tried all kinds of shoes and even barefoot. I accidentally discovered a shoe that's perfect for me. No knee pain at all and it forces me not to heel strike.

Sanuks... I'm not joking. I jog in them every morning.

These are the ones I have...

Edit: I jog on a dirt/grass trail. I don't know how well they would work on concrete.

Good point about the concrete. Shin splints ain't fun.

I'm a HW boxer with bad knees. Being a boxer, obviously I have to do a lot of roadwork. When jump roping, walking around the house, and running on the grass/sand, I ALWAYS go barefoot. I like running in Converse on pavement/concrete, but minimalist shoes, such as Vibrams, are much better.

Believe me, my knees are bad. 3 ACL reconstructions and osteoarthritis before I was even 19. Barefoot running relieves the pain a lot!

Tried to share my Garminconnect data but can't seem to find how to do it.Went in today to buy some Asics Nimbus 14s but they were out of stock. So I'll try topersevere with my Nike Air Pegasus' and run a mile every other day.I warm up with 3 minutes hard on the exercise bike and although the hamstring is still a little tender,no pulls or strains so far. 1.13 miles 9:24 minute pace for the flat mile max heart rate 184

Seconded. Though I would add that your diet needs to change too.
Do some research on the nontraditional diets, like Atkins, South Beach, Primal, etc. They really do work.
Thirded. Cardio is important to a routine oriented toward weight loss (mixed with plenty of weight work, of course), but there are a lot of cardio exercises that are easier on the joints (and often more effective) than running. Dance, martial arts("hard" styles like karate and judo are more cardio-intensive than "soft" styles like Bagua Zhang), and eliptical machines come to mind.

ETA: I didn't care for the P90X program. I found it rather dull and ineffective compared to routines I figured out myself and with tips from more experienced folks at the gym and in books written by pro trainers.

I am at 96 kilos. My favorite shoe is the Asics Cumulus. I can get it in 4E and it has very good cushioning. I run 5-6 days a week alternating sprints and shorter distances of a mile or two.

Perhaps you should try an exercise with less impact on joints, a couple year stint in roofing really damaged my knees (or decades of soccer) and I ride a bike now for cardio so I can play soccer again. It is UTTERLY important that your ride at low resistance and that you do not over or under extend your knee when riding (proper seat height). Good luck! Swimming also.

I would highly recommend you any shoes by Nike LiveStrong -- extremely light and comfortable. In fact, I've got 5 pairs of them. Don't mess with what works!

Just ordered a pair of asics nimbus 14s over t'internet.40+ £ cheaper than the shops.I tried on the cumulus in the shop and I'm assuming a British 9 is the same in the Nimbus.I was never able to exercise at anything other than running so I'll see how it goes.My knees aren't 'singing' like they were at 104 kilos although the right one is 'snicking' a bit today. One mile every other day until I get down to 7 minute miles and then I'll try some sprints. Then I'll join south west veterans athletics club and race a few 5ks or short road runs. http://www.parkrun.org.uk/ seems very good also

1.09 miles Av mile pace 9:07 max heart rate 178

There's a parkrun every saturday within easy drive of me so I'll set a 20:00 minute target,3 months from now. That should get me a top ten finish out of the 100 runners they seem to attract on average.
