I've lost 5kilos of my 20kilo target since christmas but my knees still aren't happy with jogging.I was a heel striker but I've tried the newton style of running (lean forward at the waist, look up) to try to turn myself into a midfoot striker. Are there any running shoes out there that you would say 'this is the business' for the fat? I've been jogging up the hills that are steep enough that my feet don't leave the ground but I'd like to be able to add the flat segments too and then just walk down the hills. If there are no 'wonder shoes' out there then I'll just wait the 3/4 months until I've lost all the weight but I really love running!

Check to see if there is a running shoe store in your area whose employees are really educated about biomechanics and shoes. Where I live, there is one store whose employees have been pretty much trained by an orthopedic surgeon who works with them.

I would suggest waiting to lose more weight. If you MUST run, run barefoot. That takes the most impact off your body. And when I say barefoot, I mean nothing on your feet. I don't mean "barefoot" shoes.

If you want to wear shoes when running, you are better off just choosing shoes that feel comfortable. There is some pretty compelling evidence that attempts to choose shoes based on biomechanics is a failure:

Agreed *BUT* the comfort thing is also best found via going to a store where they actually measure your feet.

I have wide feet, and I love New Balances. If you can actually find a NB store, they will measure your feet and go through your options with you.

I have tried the foot shoes ... I'm not sure what size feet you people have, or what shape.

They really, really, really, really did not fit. I tried a variety of them. Same issues. I will stick to my NBs.

I got a pair a few weeks ago, and they fit my feet quite well. I have noticed that walking with them is starting to improve my walking biomechanics and posture. I use them once or twice a week when walking my dogs on relatively short walks (~1.5 miles). YMMV

Weight training is more effective for weight loss, and less stressful on your joints than running, especially if you are overweight. Go to Wal-Mart and get a a cheap 100 pound barbell set. It's all you need. Get a great program like the P90x program or the GSP Rushfit program. I am doing the Rushfit program right now. It's great. Anything that causes muscle confusion is what you need.

Walking is also great for overweight people. There really is no need to run.

I have no doubt they work great if your feet are shaped like the shoes. Mine are not even close, apparently.

Of course if I want to run barefoot, I run barefoot :p

You know, I could have sworn my mom sent me a link after a reunion she went to about some shoes developed by some classmates of hers which were good for people 'instead of knee replacements' in some cases. It may or may not be good all around, it may be specifically for bad knees but I'll see if I can find it in my emails.

I would recommend as well to go swimming until summer. Also if you go late at night you can also do some running in the kids pool ( walking in the beginning because it is hard as hell but it will strengthen your legs very fast ) .Swimming will also buff you up and broaden your shoulders ( that way if you have big bones you will just look like a big guy and not a fat guy ).Going to a pool with cold water helps because your body will not allow you to stop and enjoy the water because you have to swim to keep your self warm.

When summer comes start running barefoot on the cement, in the afternoon it burns too much to stop so you have to continue moving ( whether running, fast walking or jumping in place ) but do not bring any footwear with you for any case because if you have an opt out option you will use it.

Pulled my left hamstring just now so it's the exercise bike for me for a fortnight i expect.probably good as my heart was ruling my head.on the parts i was able to run (uphill and risking some flat) i was doing 7.5 minute miles so that's 23:15 for the 5k which this course is exactly but very hilly (350ft elevation gain/loss).I want to be able to do it in 18minutes eventually so that would be good for 48 if I could do it this year.If I'm able to get down to 84 kilos and get some speed work in on the flat,I think I could do it.
