Cover songs usually suck, but not always. I love it when a band can do a great cover. Guns n' Roses was particularly good at this (Live and Let Die, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, everything on The Spaghetti Incident). Another band that is great at this is Disturbed. They covered Shout, Land of Confusion, and on the new album they have a cover of I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by U2. It's epic. Check it out, and post your favorite cover songs.

EDIT: Also, be sure to mention who wrote the original.

And remember, this thread is for the best cover songs ever, so shit like the Rascall Flatts version of Life is a Highway is not allowed. :)

Indy Vidual: I thought that version of Blinded by the Light was the original. That's a damn good cover if I'm not even familiar with the original. Also, that's a pretty badass version of Sympathy for the Devil. Gotta look into Laiback.

Son of Detroit: Holy crap! I recognize this from The Wonder Years, but somehow it never occurred to me that this is a cover of the Beatles song. Wow!

See, this is why I started this thread.

Jimi Hendrix cover of "All Along The Watchtower" written by Bob Dylan.

From songfacts.com:

This was written and originally recorded by Bob Dylan in 1967, but it was the Jimi Hendrix cover that made the song famous. Many other artists have covered it, including Eric Clapton, Neil Young, U2, The Dave Matthews Band and The Grateful Dead. Dylan was so impressed with Jimi's version that Dylan for years played it the way that Jimi had recorded it.

The original version of this song is very slow. Jimi Hendrix' version had a large impact on Dylan which made him make his own version "heavier."

Hendrix: "All those people who don't like Bob Dylan's songs should read his lyrics. They are filled with the joys and sadness of life. I am as Dylan, none of us can sing normally. Sometimes, I play Dylan's songs and they are so much like me that it seems to me that I wrote them. I have the feeling that Watchtower is a song I could have come up with, but I'm sure I would never have finished it. Thinking about Dylan, I often consider that I'd never be able to write the words he manages to come up with, but I'd like him to help me, because I have loads of songs I can't finish. I just lay a few words on the paper, and I just can't go forward. But now things are getting better, I'm a bit more self-confident."

WOW!! This is another case where I was wrong about who wrote it. I thought this was originally written by Jimi Hendrix! I had no idea... I've been hearing a lot about Bob Dylan lately. I think it's time I investigated this artist. I'll probably recognize a lot of his stuff.

thank you for posting this. I'm sending it to my wife. :o

Remember, by default if you like women you like Peter Cetera;)

My band use to cover this. You have to play for the chicks.
