Bernie Sanders to Announce Presidential Run

Looks like Sanders is in as a Democrat:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a blunt self-described socialist who has become a favorite of progressive activists for his denunciations of big banks and the financial elite, will jump into the 2016 presidential campaign on Thursday, according to two people familiar with his plans.

One ally — who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss Sanders’s timetable — said the 73-year-old senator is expected to make his intentions known this week and hold a rally in Vermont next month. He plans to run as a Democrat, according to his associates.

Sanders presents a notable left-leaning challenge to Hillary Rodham Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, who announced her second campaign for the White House on April 12.

Former Rhode Island governor and ex-Republican Lincoln Chafee announced his pursuit of the Democratic nod this month, but his campaign has so far generated little interest from rank-and-file party members. Others on the Democratic radar — former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley and former Virginia senator Jim Webb — have not formally decided on running.

Sanders shares many of the same political stances as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), a darling of liberals who has repeatedly said she is not running for president. That means Sanders may end up serving as the most prominent voice for the left wing of the party — particularly voters who are suspicious of Clinton and her close ties to Wall Street.

Sanders’s backers said they hope he can serve as a proxy for Warren’s disappointed drafters, helping to animate small-dollar Democratic donors with his brash persona and speeches condemning the “billionaire class.”

Speaking not long ago with The Washington Post, Sanders said his message would be concentrated on the “collapse of the middle class” and “income and wealth inequality,” which he called a “huge issue from a moral sense and a political sense.”

Sanders chose to run in the Democratic primary due to his interest in participating in the party’s primary debates, according to confidants. If he ran as an independent, he would not be able to engage with the national Democratic infrastructure or act as a direct foil to Clinton in the early primaries and caucuses.

I'd never vote for Sanders, but I'm glad someone will be in the debates running to the left of Hillary on foreign policy and civil liberties, making her look like the war-hungry harpy she is. In fact, I'd love nothing more than to see Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel pile onto the Hilldabeast again too.

As of today Hillary doesn't need to attend a debate though. She can just ignore Webb and Sanders. Either Biden or Warren need to step up for a debate to even warrant her consideration, and it looks like Warren has already shied away.

Her lead is really unprecedented. Gore led Bradley 54 to 22 which led to 9 debates, but Clinton leads Sanders 62 to 6.

The more the merrier. Clinton should have to earn it and be raked over the coals.

Tweedle dumb is about to be challenged by a tweedle dumber, excuse me while I call the newspaper. Let me know when Webb and O'Malley officially declare their candidacies, then I'll get excited.

We'll see. She was a shoe-in in 2008 too. Then Obama appeared on the stage, and it all fell apart. In any event, I am happy to see someone inclined to make her lean to the left.

Well at least Bernie is honest enough to come out and openly admit that he's a socialist.

I respect folks like Sanders, Warren, Grayson, etc. because you know where they stand. They stake their ideological positions openly and don't hide who they are and what they advocate for. I may disagree with them vehemently, but I'd rather have opponents like these than Billary...

They both attended Bilderberg, and then Obama was chosen.

With Ted Cruz staking out the far right position and Bernie Sanders staking out the far left position, this means the centrists like Hillary and an establishment Republican will most likely be the chosen ones.

jmho

Hillary has a 50 point lead on him in the polls. She can and will completely ignore him. They are polar opposites in the democratic party, they don't draw from the same voter pool at all. He will be a non-factor.

I will vote for Sanders in the primary as I feel Rand Paul has sold us out on defense spending and foreign policy. I vote for Presidents only on the basis of foreign policy and if I feel Rand isn't getting that right I will not vote for him.

Debbie-Wasserman Schulz already promised us there will be a primary and debates, etc. Plus I doubt Sanders will be the only challenger.

should read the article doug weed posted a couple years back explaining that Rand Paul will have to compromise a little to win. Doug Weed also explained foreign policy in this article. Sorry no link I think it was titled Rand Paul 2016
