She was assassinated almost 2 months after. Also, it was already common knowledge many extremists in Pakistan wanted her dead.

She was trying to run for office and was seen as a secular, pro-western leader. They thought she was a threat.

The leader who was in power at the time, Musharraf, was also extremely secular (he owned dogs, drank alcohol) and extremely pro-Western. If anything, Bhutto was quite critical of Western policies and the GWOT.
