This may be the jump into politics he is talking about. It would stink for Amash. You know the GOP in MI would love to have him run statewide.

Carson lives in Maryland right now, but grew up in Detroit. He just retired and could easily move back early enough to qualify for the ballot.

Sounds good to me. We need to keep a coalition in the house too, and in a few more terms Amash may be able to lead it.

I don't care if his position on gun control isn't exactly the same as mine. He is an honest man capable of independent logical thinking, a true rarity among politicians. He has my support.

On almost any other issue I would agree with this. I don't know how comfortable I'd feel with another person in Washington who is willing to limit gun rights, though, regardless of every other stance he may hold.

This. Anyone who trusts weapons monopolies to the government is really philosophically different than me fundamentally...

All that said, if I had to choose, blind, without knowing exactly what policies would be adopted, whether gun control would be dealt with locally or Federally, I'd pick locally in a heartbeat. If that's what it takes to keep the Feds out, I guess that's what it takes.

He was born in Michigan so maybe he still has a residency there he lives at from time to time.

He didn't seem to have much conviction about gun control, but we'll see.

Just wanted to point out though, the link in the OP is just an editorial of the author's wishful thinking. I don't think Carson has actually said a word about running for Senate or even coming back to Michigan.

Mine too. Plus he's a fan of Rand. I bet he's open minded enough to see a different POV on guns. You have to remember where someone comes from. As an inner city neurosurgeon he's probably seen his share of damage from gun violence.

There are a lot of doctors who are reflexive against guns because they've cleaned up casualties. It's an emotional reaction not a fully reasoned one.

I am going to have to look more into him. His position on guns does give me pause. His praise of Rand of sticking by his principles is a plus. At first blush he seems to be able to at least critically think about issues. Michigan just looked like a prime potential target for him to me because a lot of the big candidates already dropped out. We need to keep this on our radar either way.

Here is a write up on the subject from AllahPundit today.

It's not a direct statement that he won't run, but when asked Carson didn't seem too interested in the idea.

The Detroit News ran the article, it's titled "Neurosurgeon won't run for Levin's Senate Seat" - I would link to it but it won't let me until I have three posts.

This would be interesting. Can he be brought around on guns? I'd hate to toss him on the ash heap because he does have a very impressive resume and likes Rand to boot.
