In an interview with Bloomberg TV's "With All Due Respect," Ben Carson, a former neurosurgeon and potential 2016 candidate, said parents who do not vaccinate their children are "selfish," comparing them to secondhand smokers.

But Carson balked at commenting directly on comments made by Kentucky Senator Rand Paul that vaccines could lead to mental disorders, saying only that he has not encountered such cases during his medical career and that "even doctors are entitled to their own opinions."

"There have been many stories like that that have circulated," he said. "Have I ever encountered one? No."

Carson added, "I think there probably are people who may make a correlation where one does not exist and then that sort of ignites and catches fire and spreads and that's probably the source of those things," he told Bloomberg Politics managing editors John Heilemann and Mark Halperin. "I am not aware of scientific evidence of a direct correlation."

His secondhand smoking comment is a poor one. A kid without a vaccine doesn't mean they are transmitting a disease. He should say its like those evil parents who had chicken pox parties hundreds and hundred of months ago

lol I forgot about those.
It doesn't mean they are transmitting a disease, but if there is an outbreak then it suddenly becomes a very serious problem.

What's a surgeon know or care about vaccines? (Or an ophthalmologist for that matter.) :p

This actually seems like a fair point. Both Ben and Rand can essentially claim that they are not infectious disease specialists nor immunologists.

Welcome TommyJeff. Only noticed you yesterday despite your 100+ posts. I look forward to hearing more from you.

Despite that they clearly don't have the same position on this, it's noteworthy that Carson refused to criticize Rand even though the interviewer pushed him hard to do so repeatedly. (like for 80% of the full interview!)

Carson: "I'm sure that if you had an in-dept conversation with him, [Rand] you would come away with a different impression, because he is actually an very reasonable person."

^This. Exactly. Rand doesn't (publicly anyway) agree 100% with his own father. There is a difference between disagreement and disrespect. Ben didn't disrespect Rand.
