Former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the U.S. central bank could have done more to fight the country's financial crisis and that he struggled to find the right way to communicate with markets.

"We could have done some things on the margin to mitigate somewhat the crisis," Bernanke, 60, said on Tuesday in his first public speaking engagement since he stepped down in January after eight years heading the Fed.

"Although we have been very aggressive, I think on the monetary policy front we could have been even more aggressive."

Bernanke said he could now speak more freely about the crisis than he could while at the Fed - "I can say whatever I want" - and in remarks to over 1,000 bankers and financial professionals in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, he made clear that he had regrets.

...

Bernanke received at least $250,000 for his appearance at the financial conference staged by National Bank of Abu Dhabi NBAD.AD, the UAE's largest bank, according to sources familiar the matter. NBAD did not announce the fee.

...

Greenspan embarked on a series of lucrative speeches after he stepped down, and Bernanke now appears to be doing the same. He is scheduled to speak at an event in South Africa on Wednesday and in Houston on Friday.

Ben Bernanke earned more in 40 minutes on Tuesday than he made all of last year as head of the U.S. Federal Reserve.

Bernanke was paid at least $250,000 for his first public speaking engagement, in Abu Dhabi, since stepping down in January, according to sources familiar with the matter. That compares to his 2013 paycheck of $199,700, and the appearance was only the first of three around the world this week.

Well the sunny side of this is that his $250k is really only worth about $1500.00 thanks to the shenanigans from his time in the fed...

Every time I see this man's face I see an image of a beard with a smug smile behind it.

Fuck him.

This punk gives beards a bad rap....

Please don't hold his attempts at masculinity against those of us who are real....:o

Ron Paul only asks $50,000 for his speaking fee. Book him here: http://www.greatertalent.com/ronpaul/

Ron Paul will follow the well-trod path of hitting the paid speaking circuit after his retirement from Congress — and will charge $50,000 per appearance, BuzzFeed has learned.

Paul’s fee is in addition to hotel, meals, and ground transportation in his origin and destination cities for two people. He’s represented by Greater Talent Network Speakers Bureau.

Paul’s rate puts him about in the middle of the field for former politicians. He’s making more than John Huntsman, Mike Huckabee, and Joe Scarborough, but much less than Al Gore and Arnold Schwarzenegger, each of whom command six-figure fees.

I think in a very small effort to help right just a fraction of his wrongs, he should burn that entire $250k and help take some currency out of circulation to counter what he created via a keystroke.

Some people think the function of the Federal Reserve is perverse and immoral.

Others try to compare speaking engagement (ie. getting inside connections) to a Fed Chairman to that of Ron Paul.
