Banks with low cost wires or how do you guys invest in gold?

I have Bank of America and they charge $25 for outgoing wires and $12 for incoming wires. This might not seem so bad, but I'm just a college student and would like to be as cost efficient as possible while investing in gold and other commodities.

Are there any banks you guys would recommend? Perhaps even online banks? I'm still kind of hesitant because I live in the Southeast and Bank of America is everywhere which makes it very convenient.

Or better yet, how do you guys invest in gold?

I use Apmex.com or GoldMoney.

If you wire more than $5,000 before March 31, 2008 to GoldMoney they reimburse $30. Hopefully they will have ACH back and functioning after Chase pulled their little stunt.

I hear Washington Mutual offers free outgoing domestic and international wire transfers. Of course, they will probably be one of the first large banks to fail so don't keep much in the account.

Some places will give you a Fedex number and can send them a check, overnight.

I have just mailed checks to the mint/dealer and when they got them, I would make the purchase then.

See if you can pay with an ACH (basically an electronic check). If so, that's usually free.

Buy used 14k solid gold jewelry on eBay for about 85% of melt or less. You have to do a lot of hunting and sometimes you get plated or something else which has to be returned but if you're on a tight budget that is the best way I know to get gold. If you don't want to sit in front of a computer all day you can pan for it or use a metal detector on the beaches and other places.
