Austin Texas For My Birthday, What Hotel Should I Stay In And What Bars Should I Go To?

Stay as close to downtown as you can, and in the evening just walk down Sixth until you hear something you like, and then go in to wherever it's coming from.
And eat at Tacasita on Research and/or Stubb's under the I-35 express lanes (if it's still open).

If you want to stay somewhere really fancy, thinking Omni?, you're going to pay out the ass on a Saturday night. Its right by all the bars and the party circuit, but the last time I was there they had some after-hours policy, where security will check you if you're coming back to your room after about 10PM... guessing a result of hoards of drunk college kids cramming into one room and causing damage.
If I was you, I'd just stay at La Quinta on 11th street and walk down to 6th after 6. You'll hear/see something you like. Save your money for the expensive partying and eating, which there will be a lot of.
I just remember when I went that everything was really crowded and really obnoxious, but that's to be expected with the massive student population and UT five minutes away. I didn't get to do much, but I remember Hole In The Wall off of Guadalupe (pretty much on campus). It might be a nice pre-party spot if you're into live music and beer.

Stay at the W or Sheraton, earn lots of SPG points.
for a good dinner, check out Perry's steakhouse, if you like pork chop, they have an awesome one.
I don't know much about the bar scene, I typically hang out in north austin with friends, not at bars.
