Attention: Important Indiana Delegate Info

The rule specifically states that voting in another party's primary will not disqualify you

I read in the rules that no voting history will not disqualify you. Would you double-check this in the rules PDF to verify where it says this about another party's primary?

I was wrong, it appears that only absence cannot disqualify you. Voting democratic, however, seems that it could play a major role in disqualification.

Thanks for bringing that up.

I just spoke to a friend of mine who is also a PL and he spoke to the county clerks office yesterday. The clerk said that since you do not register as affiliated to any party and it doesn't occur until you vote in a primary, there is no reason you cant apply to be a delegate. This jives with the language from the party rules, which basically state that not voting in a previous primary does NOT disqualify you as a delegate. However, I am still waiting to hear back from my local county GOP for clarification.

Someone in Indianapolis called state GOP and said You must be a member of the Republican Party or they will disqualify you and we wont know that you are disqualifed until deadline is over

I called the Indiana GOP and spoke to Barb Mcclelland. She said I needed to have my county chair sign a form stating that I was a republican. She gave me his name and number so I cale dhim an dhe said he had no idea what she was talking about and all I needed to do was complete the CAN-37 and select republican delegate then vote in the primary. There are 6 delegates for my precinct. If we get more than 6 applicants, then we are voted on. If not more than 6, then we are automatically in. I am also truning in my form for precinct committeeman today as well.

Ok we need to find out who is telling the truth on this Barb or the county I too have been trying to get this answer and Barb is telling that if you are not a party member you can be disqualified please please we need to find this answer so they can not disqualify us after doing all the work

I called her back after I talked to Doug (county chair) and she said she was going to check with his vice chair since she worked with Barb. She said she would call me back, but never did. I will keep on it, but I am confident that nothing more than completing the CAN-37 and voting in the primary is required. FYI, I also filed for precinct committeeman today. I want to become as involved as I can in my precinct. When I filed, there was no one else from my district on the sheet yet for committeeman or delegate, but it is only three days :). My advice is to make sure you have filed your CAN-37 before Feb 22 regardless. If it does turn out like I think and nothing special is required, then no big deal. But, if more is required that is one less thing to worry about. Oh, almost forgot, one interesting thing about what Barb said. I asked her what the name of the form was and she said, it doesn't have a name its just a form. Which leads me to believe, it is NOT a required form by the GOP but something they came up with. I would be willing to help anyone out getting the forms completed or whatever else they need so we can get delegates and committeemen in place.

Melissa, where do you get the information that you have to pay to be a delegate? Neither of the individuals I talked to at the state GOP or county GOP said anything about that being one of the criteria. If you look on any of the websites as well, there is nothing baout joining the party or paying a fee.

not pay to be a delegate ---pay membership fees to be a republican member and I would get a reciept or a membership card

Thats what I am saying. From what I can gather from talking to the GOP here, that is not required.

Well Barb from the state said you have to be a member I am calling next week to ask myself but I am trying to be safe and not let them have any reason to disqualify us

I just spoke to my county (Lake) GOP secretary.

He says Rule "Member in good standing with Republican Party" has never been properly defined. So, I guess as long as you have never like.. personally pissed off your county chairman or something, you should be fine.

As far as voting: If you've never voted in a primary election before, you're ok. Even if you voted for a democrat in a your most recent general election, you're still OK. However, if in the last Primary election, you voted for a democrat, THEN you will be disqualified. However, he also said there is one caveat to that. If, in the last election you voted for a democrat and lived in another state, or perhaps even just in another county, then the people verifying your eligibility will have no voting record for you and you should still be ok.

Bottom line, the only thing that you will be disqualified for is if you voted for anything other than a Republican in the last Primary election, if you're still living in the same county as when you voted in that manner.

Otherwise, FILE! The worst that could happen is that they deny you. Whatever, it's better than not having tried at all.

One more note on memberships... some County's may be different. Mine for a fact has no membership dues or forms to sign or anything else like that. It's not a standardized rule, so don't let it affect your decision on whether to file or not.

Oh that is great I am calling next week the state to see what they say and I would recommend getting a receipt or a membership card to make sure you are a member

Ok this is the straight beef:

I order to be a delegate before the dealine you must:

Have either never voted in a primary or have voted Republican in the last primary you voted in.

After the primary is over and you voted republican the very next day you can call to see if there are any positions still available. If so the county chair can appoint you to one.

In Indiana since you do not delcare a party on the voter registration you are concidered a member of the party in which you last voted for in the last primary you voted in.

Paying dues to the party will NOT make you eligable to be a delgate. It will only help those that have never voted in a primary before. Also if you never voted in a primary before you may have to get a letter signed by the county chair stating you are in good standing.

Thanks will let you know what they tell me when I ask the state to make sure all the info they are giving us is the same

Awesome.. We've probably got about 30-40 people running for state delegate in the 1st congressional district that I know of. Probably another 20 or so running for precinct committeeman positions in the Lake/Porter county area.
