Nice! I've been trying to decide what fruit trees I'd like to plant, I can only pick two and I don't want them to get too large. I'm thinking of apple and plum. I don't think nut trees grow around here...which is a shame.

Actually, Smith's book doesn't include fruit trees, bushes, and berries. Miller Nurseries has good books on those.

I strongly recommend you buy the third book, "Fruits & Berries for the Home Garden," before you buy your trees, since trees are a years-long commitment and a serious decision.

Amy Apple trees have to cross polinate so if you just plant 1 it will not bear/ need to check for self polinating and cross polinating when trying to pick trees
Also for all would highly recommeng going to amazon books and getting a used copy of Back to Basics by readers digest/ Hard covers used run $10 to $20
with this book and a knife you can go from bare survival to growing, fororging, canning, storing, hunting trapping , ect long list of plants to eat, how to grow, just mountains of info.

The other advice I have is to supplement with trace minerals and natural soil amendments: High amounts of greensand, lots of kelp meal, plenty of bone meal and rock phosphate, some epsom salts, some Espoma Garden Iron.

Most soil is low in trace minerals. Therefore, most compost and manure is low in trace minerals, as well. So you need amendments that have trace minerals. And standard fertilizers don't have the slow-release qualities of amendments like rock phosphate and greensand. So you need those, too.

I wish I could start a garden. Apartment = no land.

Be careful on Bulk Flour.....plan on using it within 2 years, it will go rancid MUCH faster than wheat that is unmilled.....for long term storage, store unmilled wheat along with a wheat mill....I nabbed 90LBS of hard red wheat just before the price jump....in a 70degrees enviorment...it should keep for 10 years....milled flour....2 years max............Storing food is a great hedge against food inflation and shortages.........but store it in the way that will last the longest.......

NICE!!!.....best I could find for eagles in Buffalo NY was $20 each.......But I instead went with Junk pre 1965 US silver coin for under spot.....because it was a better deal and from a shop who's family was hoarding silver since the 50's...

But realize when you are buying silver locally.....remember ever seller is Different......

Someone who loaded up at $5 OZ and has pressing bills in a few days......Is much more willing to sell for close to spot.....or below spot, than someone who has no debt and enough cash to cover pressing bills....there are deals out there.....you just have to look....Your chance of finding the deals is greater in big cities....and less in Rural areas where there are few dealers........

older man said he just does jewelry but might have some Eagles in the safe if he was remembering correctly. He came back with 37 eagles and asked me if I had
any idea of current spot. Thinking he would check before making sell offer I said I think it was around $17.30 - $17.40. He said if you take them all I'll give em to ya for the $17.00. I asked about bars as I'm looking to move $5000 - $6000 into silver and he said I don't hold silver just jewelry. So I just got very lucky. Bob

If they allow this to happen many of the sheeple will wake up from their sleep and blame the government for their hunger.
I think they want to keep the American majority fat happy and satisfied and destracted so they can continue their Empire building around the world.

I could be wrong though just like the guy on here that predicted the stock market crash for last Monday.

IMO, this is what Dr. Paul was warning about, if the ICC/BIS do not leave the dollar, we could drag the rest of the world down with us.

Oil countries will bail on the dollar sooner or later, China has a lot of US dollars NOW, that is the only thing saving our asses. Once China decides not to spend/buy Oil in US Dollars, that's the crash.

They will be the big buyer on the stage cuz we're cutting back. Oil countries will break the so called, "Henry Kissinger, dollar kick-back" deal and it's the Old West of currencies again. It is interesting Kuwait and Bill Gates bought huge amounts of Sliver over the last year or so.

Now maybe we'll get that 300 years of Oil & Gas up at Prudhoe Bay Alaska.

Maybe, That must mean, the energy companies are ready to move on to hydro cell or elec/batteries. Naa!

Remember the problem is our consumption, America would be a much nicer place for the Rich if "we" weren't consuming so much. There may be energy but you won't be able to afford it.

This summer, plan on growing a garden and learning how to can or dry your food. I just picked up about 40 mason jars/lids for free from someone who was looking to get rid of them. I'm pricing dehydrators for the herbs and maybe beef jerky, things like that.

I've grown a couple gardens before, but none this large. And I'm trying raised bed this time though. If anyone has any good advice, I'll take it!

I doubt there will be shortages around here, but there will certainly be price hikes.

this is exactly what i want to do... although i don't have the greenest thumb ever i do ok... and you can pick up those old RonCo food dehydrators at flea markets and things like that.... they work really good

also... really research canning before you do it... a distant aunt (didn't know her) died from canned beets.. apparently beets are the most toxic if improperly canned but there are others as well, i have no idea which ones.....

and as for herbs... i have been looking at counter-top herb growers lately, olivia has been asking for one so i thought i might get one for her birthday saturday... theres some good ones out there... just google it... i can let you know if i get one how it goes

Well fortunately I hate beets--so no worries there! Counter top herb growers would be great, more convenient to the kitchen possibly. Is Olivia your daughter? If so, that's cool that you're getting her involved in the gardening thing. I was pretty much raised a city slicker, so a lot of this stuff is new to me.

I really like the idea of drying because it takes up so much less space and is lighter, plus, the dehydrator I'm looking into is one that you can make yogurt, raise bread, even ferment stuff! I should probably build one myself, it's a pretty basic concept, but I'm feeling lazy lately.
