Sen. Rand Paul demolished his competition in the 2014 Washington Times/CPAC presidential preference straw poll on Saturday, winning 31 percent of the vote -- nearly three times the total of second-place Sen. Ted Cruz.

Mr. Cruz's 11 percent was still a big improvement for the freshman senator, who won just 4 percent in last year's straw poll. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson was third with 9 percent and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was fourth with 8 percent in results that signal growing discontent with the GOP establishment in Washington.

As I recall from past years the results are usually leaked a half hour or so before the announcement, even when Rand/Ron didn't win.

Note that the loons at SCF released their straw poll like 10 minutes before this came out. Cruz of course won by like 30 over Rand.

Carl Cameron said that Ben Carson coming in third was the headline.
Don't ever change, Carl.

Last year was tight, and that was Rand coming right off the filibuster. This is really good stuff.

Yeah, I'm gonna be that guy and remind folks that, you know, Ron Paul won the Straw Poll in both 2010 and 2011 and look where that ended. The base here is mostly young folks- these are not the people who are the decision makers or king makers within the GOP. They're the small base that isn't responsible for bringing in big money. So yeah, while it may be a nice, temporary thing to gloat about, we've been down this road before. Let's not forget that many still see McConnell, Boehner, Rubio, Christie, Graham and so on as the 'faces' and voices of the GOP.

Was it 2012 that Ron Paul came in last after winning 2 years in a row.

Wasnt that also the same year they implemented the electronic voting?

Do they still use electronic voting?

In 2012, Both Mitt and Santorum were busing in people to vote in the straw poll.

Ron didn't have:
National Association for Gun Rights
Rand PAC
FreedomWorks
National Right to Work Committee
Friendliness with the Conservative media
A dad who built the base that will help him get elected
The presidency of Barack Obama to disillusion people about government
A building alliance with social conservatives.
The public speaking ability of Rand.

There are so many differences I could go on for a while.

The main difference is media respect. The media never respected Ron Paul nor his electoral prospects.
