Anyone run into trouble at University for liking Ron Paul or being pro conservative?

I imagine Economy majors and business majors don't have many issues, but I am a social sciences major and debate whether or not I should stay in the closet, so to speak, just to get my references and earn the trust of my leftward professors.

I searched around the forums here and I have heard that conservative students, especially Libertarian types find it hard to be out in the open and make it through social sciences programs.

I believe that Ron Paul's defense of individual liberty is as much about understanding and compassion as any left wing government program, but they do not believe anything is possible by free will individualism alone.

It won't work all the time, but the Against Me Argument YouTube - New Hampshire Liberty Forum - Keynote Speaker: Stefan Molyneux from Freedomain Radio (Part 1) is a good way to get through to left-leaning folk.

Of course, this also comes with the understanding that the same standard applies to "right wing" programs, or any programs at all.

I couldn't agree more. It is tempting to come out wanting a fight, but sometimes it can be pure folly. Learn something from the "Art of War" learn all you can and there is never such a thing as too much intelligence gathering.

When you come out depends on how far you want to go in your education and career.

I would like to hear more stories about college professors who are also conservative or even center right.

Yeah, ratemyprofessors.com and pickaprof.com are good tools.

Basically, you need to get to know each individual professor before you engage them in such a way as to challenge their left-leaning view (if they have one). If you think they like engagement in rhetorical debate or well-reasoned argument, then go for it. They might surprise you.

However, if all indications are that they are rather absorbed with themselves and will not take kindly to challenges, then for that class it would be best to ride it out.

Same here. Most of my profs are lefties, but if they are cool they appreciate people bringing an opposing view to the table. My profs love me and deliberately mark me upwards because I stir up hege arguments.

I've had a few lefty ones that will do all in their power to give you a lower grade or wash you out as soon as thy figure out you aren't a good little socialist lapdog.

Not in academia but I'd try to seek out sympathetic professors by checking out their profile online and/or googling them. Maybe walk over to the econ department and get their advice. I was a business undergrad and even those professors were left-leaning. Some were pretty far left and even brought it in the classroom. In those cases I went out of my way to call them out on it but then again I wasn't banking on any recommendation letters.

As an aside I came across this libertarian sociology blog a little while back. Enjoy.

I've never had a problem with a professor or other student outside of simply disagreeing with them. I actually had a professor for World Politics, American Politics, and Comparative Politics that not only knew about the Austrian economists but believed they were right about our current economic problems. I don't know that he was an outright Austrian but he was definitely sympathetic. I wish he hadn't left at the end of last year.

I'm at Liberty University. I have to deal a lot of neo-cons but they have integrity. Most are willing to discuss the issues. I also know that we have some Austrian thinkers in the business department. I happen to have a Goldwater conservative teaching my current Gov class and I have a libertarian teaching my Criminal Justice class. I don't have to deal with a liberal leaning administration, but instead I get an administration that likes to invite people like Karl Rove to speak.

In what manner do you use the rmp site and do your profs know you use it?

I am still playing it safe but some cats may be out of the bag such as my general dislike for any sort of unnecessary bureaucracy and my affinity for ideas on individualism.

I heard GMU is the de-facto campus for Libertarians and they actually do teach quite a bit about Austrian Econ. I think they're one of the few schools that actually have classes on Austrian Economics.

I was planning on going to GMU to finish my BS when I get out of the Military. Any thoughts?

I suppose it would depend if you want to continuously get in pointless arguments (they are demoralized so theres no real point) with half baked intellectuals, communist doups and other scum. Ideally we need educators who can go into schools/universities and start a counter revolution.

The result? The result you can see -- most of the people who graduated in the 60's, dropouts or half-baked intellectuals, are now occupying the positions of power in the government, civil service, business, mass media, and educational systems. You are stuck with them. You can't get rid of to them. They are contaminated. They are programmed to think and react to certain stimuli in a certain pattern [alluding to Pavlov]. You can not change their mind even if you expose them to authentic information. Even if you prove that white is white and black is black, you still can not change the basic perception and the logic of behavior. In other words [for] these people the process of demoralization is complete and irreversible. To rid society of these people you need another 15 or 20 years to educate a new generation of patriotically minded and common sense people who would be acting in favor and in the interests of United States society.
