Meh, any place works. Looking around my house, there are dozens upon dozens of places to hide and store PMs.

What's the chance you're going to get robbed, anyway? I've never been robbed before, I doubt I'll ever be robbed in my entire lifetime.

There is a funny story Jim told on his radio show the Finanical Sense Newshour: One of his friends was robbed by a couple burglars--he had gold bullion bars right there in the open, but the burglars decided just to take the stereo set.

Like someone said, use your imagination. However, my house was broken into a couple of years ago (they did not find my PM!). But in my situation, I found it interesting that he/she/they searched everywhere in my house EXCEPT (1) bathrooms, (2) kitchen and (3) utility room . . .

My father in law had his money hid inside his wall behind a dummy electrical outlet which I thought was a good idea. Also they sell fake soft drink cans and ajacks cans which can be used to store money. The only problem with the cans is if the thieves are thirsty and thats the last drink in the fridge you are screwed.

Buy silver bricks, paint them red, and build a fake fireplace out of them. As long as the thieves don't get cold and build a fire, you will be okay.

Or, balance your silver bricks on the top of the doors and then when the thief opens the door, the brick will fall on their head and kill them.

Or, buy one huge brick that weighs 5,000 pounds so they can't lift it.

Ever watch "To Catch a Thief" on the Discovery Channel? One of the first places a good thief checks is under the mattress, they just upend it. That one also usually emptied the cabinets looking for cash. Strange cans would probably stand out.

Seriously, if you want your valuables to be safe, buy a safe, because a safe is safe--by definition.

ooh i know get one of those cans of fake hair spray they sell at the bong shops, then just put it in your medicine cabinet... they sell fake cans of ajax, peanut butter and everything else plus books that look completely real as well.... dont trust a safety deposit box either

What about burrying your pm. There is no way they would go there. Just go out late one night and map out all your burrial spots and put that on a safe electronic storage or something like that.

I've got my family all worried that I'm going to be robbed now that I have some pm. They say put it in a safety deposit box. I've been reading up on ways to outsmart potential burglars. Part of me says just leave some money out in the open (FRNs) and they'll just grab it and leave, kind of like an insurance policy against having your whole place ransacked (only it is just a one time premium). They don't care about investments they just care about getting drugs.

Yes! And the professional thieves who took $4.5 MegaFRNs worth of silver, gold, and copper have learned to target the big caches, so don't worry about the professionals getting a few ounces. You only have to hide yours from amateurs.

For the amount of PM's you have, go to home depot get a piece of copper pipe 3 foot long with a threaded end and a screw on cap that fits along with a couple clamps that fit the pipes diameter. place with other water pipes. Example clamp to pipes at your water heater. looks like it belongs and when the SHTF you have a club and a nice piece of copper to sell or trade.
Get your PM's out of that safety deposit box at some point. In the depression all the pm's in the safety deposit boxes of the closed banks that folks couldn't get into were confiscated by the Fed not the federal govt but the FED.
Plan B get that pipe with both ends threaded 2 caps and bury it. And lastly always leave a glass jar with loose change on bedroom desk or bureau and a ten or 2 in the top dresser draw so a thief thinks he found the money stash and leaves.

There have been lots of good ideas expressed. If you want to shield your PMs from burglars, then a good safe coupled with just not talking about your PMs to anyone should suffice. The good news is that you can store over 1M in gold in a very small footprint.

As far as .gov goes, a safe isnt going to help you. A buried cache in a shielded box, stored on property that you control, but isnt registered to you personally, is likely the only way to protect it sufficiently.

This is a good reason to diversify your holdings (if you are worth enough) and think about investing in overseas income investments in case of a total meltdown, at least you have some place to go.

Am more concerned about FRN inflating away to nothing in a bank account. A decoy safe works well for most theives are smash, grab and run.

They get a few rolls of quarters or pennies and a couple of twenties laying on the counter they will leave quickly. Am in the house they will also get some .357 lead for souviners. THe people that will take your PMs(aside from rare professionals) are ones that that a person Knows, and that person knows about the PMs.

A determined thief will find them, if given enough time. If you have a safe and are home, you might be forced to open it at gunpoint -- either that, or they just carry it away. Almost all of the ideas mentioned in this thread are so standard that they wouldn't stop most thieves for more than a few minutes.

The best and most important way to protect your assets at home is to not tell anyone you have them. Period. No one. Even a casual remark between family members that's overheard by the wrong people can result in a robbery.

I'm not going to suggest a specific way to store things at home, since I don't want to give would-be thieves any (more) ideas. Just this: try to think like a thief. Places that you wouldn't normally go are the first places they would likely look.

Also, unless you live in a high-crime area, I wouldn't get too paranoid about it. Burglaries are really not that common, and robberies even less so (to answer the OP's original question, I have been burgled, though never robbed).

robbed 2. Law. the felonious taking of the property of another from his or her person or in his or her immediate presence, against his or her will, by violence or intimidation.

burglarized To enter and steal from (a building or other premises).

You cannot be robbed unless you are present when the property is taken. Burglary is what happens when you are not present.

I wince when someone says they have been robbed when they really mean burglarized.

I actually hadn't ever realized there was a distinction between the two, I had always assumed that they were synonymous terms, and that when someone takes your property when you are present it is merely a more serious version of that same crime. Thanks for the clarification! I at least will not make you wince in the future.
